Stone Massage – The Experience of Nature’s Healing Tools

A therapist skilled in Stone Massage will tell you that this kind of massage can take even the most stressed client into a deep state of relaxation. As the heated stones are glided over the skin, they become extensions of the therapist's hands, until the client can no longer differiate between the stone tools and the warm pressure of the therapist's hands. I have had clients come to me with a load of stress, who leave the session feeling much clearer, yet grounded. In fact, several of my clients insist on having regular Stone Massage all year long, even in the hot summer months. For them, the nurturing heat of the stones allows them to reconnect with their inner self, while allowing them time and space to let go of all the unwanted stuff they hold on to.

Beside massaging with the heated stones, I use a variety of other techniques to provide a therapeutic effect for the client. I employ the benefits of long term application of heat by placing heated stones on specific areas of the body; ie. along the muscles surrounding the spine, including the trapezius muscles and down to the sacral area. This increases the amount of blood and lymph to the region, allowing the muscles to soften and relax, relieving muscle spasms, and opening the doors for me to work even deeper on the tension. Similarly, prolonged application of hot stones over the heart and lungs reduces blood pressure and encourages slower and deeper breathing. Another technique I use is tapping one hot stone onto another; the bottom stone placed flat against a targeted part of the body. This technique serves as a type of tapotement, in which clumps of muscle fibers can be separated and tense muscle can also be softened.

Often, I will choose to use a prolonged application of hot stones, followed by a brief application of cold stones. In fact, the use of both hot and cold stones is far more effective than using hot or cold separately. Short-term cold application is very effective in helping to rehabilitate injuries or increase range of motion, and reduce inflammation and pain. When cold is applied to the body, it attempts to heat itself and return to homeostasis. The acceleration in the exchange of blood, lymph and digestive fluids stimulates a detoxification process and speeds up healing. That's not to say that Stone Massage must always include a cold application, but it depends on the needs of the client. In the case of chronic constipation, the therapist can apply short term cold to stimulate the digestive secretions and increase peristaltic movement to release the blockage in the bowel. One simple and more comfortable way of applying cold is through the reflex points on the feet and hands.

Stone Massage has just recently been discovered within the last decade in the modern day spa and health industry. Yet, since the dawn of time, people have been drawn to the energies of stones. Many Shamans, medicine people, and spiritual healers from all over the world use stones and crystals in their healing ceremonies. Each color and type of stone reflects an energy and a purpose, providing a clearing and releasing effect on the person as it is being used. Stones have been used for healing purposes through history. Native Americans use heated stones in their sweat lodges. They also use a sun-heated stone on the belly of a woman when her menstrual period is painful. In Hawaii, the Kahunas use lava stones wrapped in Ki leaf in their healing treatments. In China the use of heated stones to tie tired muscles dates back to before the Shan Dynasty (2000-5000 BC). In Russia and Japan there is a tradition using black stones in their bath. They line the bottom of the bathtub with smooth hot stones and then lie down on them, soaking in the soothing warm energy that radiates from the stones (usually herbal extracts are added to the water).

The most commonly used stones in Stone Massage, and the ones which give warm penetrating heat, are the Basalt stones. The basalt stones are the most abundant of the volcanic rocks, especially plentiful in those regions that have underwater volcanic disturbance within recent times. They form downwind of the volcano, cool slowly, and crystallize again and again – causing their great density. It is this density that enables the basalt stones to hold a great amount of heat for a period of time. The very composition of the basalt stone is the earth's crust, so as you may imagine, the stones are deeply grounding. Basalt is a mineral to help one through changes and to provide stability to one's life. It can assist in diminishing the negative aspects of one's character and be very useful in dissipating anger.

Marble stones are commonly used for cold application. Marble stone can take thousands, even millions of years to form, as the extreme temperature and pressure of the earth's crust, mantle and core turn relatively soft limestone into an extremely hard metamorphic marble. Marble, then, has been created through the entire geological process, and holds immense periods of time and records of the evolution of life in its crystals. Marble reflects the energy of ancient spiritual knowledge and wisdom, and helps to access the “unused” powers of the mind.

It is in the effects of these tools that I, and my clients have found great satisfaction. The stones became my teachers and they do a lot of the work for me. It is my goal that each person who receives one of my Stone Massages will connect with the profound and healing power of nature.

7 Questions to Ask a Complementary Training School Before Enrolling

Complementary therapy is a great thing to learn. It can open up new doors to a career in complementary therapy, it can give you new skills and confidence and you can share your knowledge with very grateful friends and family. If you want to learn all about complementary therapy you will probably need to find a good training provider. Finding a good one can be difficult with so many options available; luckily you can find out more information about them before making a decision.

What questions should you ask a training provider before enrolling?

When choosing a training provider for complementary therapy you will go through a selection process. You will probably start by compiling a shortlist which will consider price, course content, expertise and location. The next stage after that will likely consider reviews and you will likely spend a bit of time researching each training school individually. It is at this stage you should prepare some questions to ask them.

Asking questions is a great way to find out a bit more about the school and to see if it will be a fit for you, your personality and your commitments. What questions should you ask though?

Below are a few questions you should interview your potential new training provider with;

1. How long have you exhausted?

This question will not always provide you with a meaningful answer as there is always some excellent training providers out there which has just opened. However as a general rule of thumb a school that has been in existence for quite some time is usually good at what they do and there before will get the students coming through the door.

2. What qualifications / expertise do you have?

You should grill any potential school you may attend about their qualifications and expertise. If you decide to enroll at a training provider you are essentially investing a lot of your time and money there. It is for this reasons that you will want to know if they are highly qualified experts who can deliver you the best education.

3. What results do you get / pass success rate?

You would not enroll at a University or college without considering pass success rates and you should not enroll at a complementary training provider without checking them either. The higher the success rates the better the education.

4. What do your students say about you?

Quite often a good provider will have student feedback in abundance. Ask to see it and you will get a good feel about the place. Of course they are illegally to show any negative feedback but if you read the reports carefully you will get a slightly better understanding of how they work.

5. What are the terms and conditions?

A plain, simple and boring question yet significantly important. As with any purchase check the terms and conditions to be aware of any problems that may occur further down the line.

6. What is expected of me financially, physically and mentally?

You will probably be aware of the course price but you may not be aware of any materials and uniform you might need. It is important to find out about this in advance to help you plan, prepare and ponder before enrolling on a course.

7. Do many of your students go into professional complementary therapy?

It may not be your aim to join the complementary therapy industry but a good indicator of the quality of a school will be how many former students have made a success of themselves.

There are likely to be countless other questions you will want to ask a training provider before enrolling and you should really ask them all, but even if you only ask the 7 questions listed above you will reach a greater understanding of what is available.

Do not forget this is your time and money and you have a right to get the best deal you possibly can.

How to Get a Great Massage

Have you ever received a massage where you walked away feeling like the therapist simply did not understand how to give a good massage?

We all know the feeling of this experience, and the worst thing about it is that you've only had a small taste of the experience so you want another massage as soon as you walk out the door.

I hope I can shed some light on how to help you get a great massage next time.

The important thing is to understand this situation from the therapists' point of view. Every customer has vastly different needs, and therapists must guess what areas of the body need attention and what type of massage you desire. this may seem obvious to you because you're experiencing the massage, so you're judging the massage in real-time, but the therapist will not know the quality of his work until you communicate it to them. Most people do not understand how vastly different peoples' tastes are when it comes to massage. Some people like having the point of the therapist's elbow bearing down on their back with full force, and others like massage so soft that it tickles. Some customers almost immediately fall sleep as soon as you start massaging their scalp, while others hate having their head touched. The therapist has no way of knowing what type of customer they're dealing with until they're halfway through the massage.

Usually, when a massage begins, the therapist will ask what type of massage the customer wants, and the pressure that feels best to them. While saying that you want a “medium pressure Swedish massage” is a good start it falls far short of really informing the therapist of what to do. Many customers feel like they've told the therapist what they want, then just wait for whatever massage is given to them.

Unfortunately, with that limited amount of information the therapist will likely still be guessing exactly the type of massage and the areas of the body that you like the most.

If you want to get the best massage possible, you will need to be more pro-active.

So, what can you do?

First, you should attempt to explain exactly your preferences before your massage begins. You could say, for example, “I like a hard massage using forearms and elbows, and I like like 75% of the time spent on my legs and 25% of the time on my back and neck.” At this point, you will hopefully have the therapist in the correct ballpark. However, the main glitch to this approach will occur when the therapist does not speak English. Then you'll need to resort to pointing and playing charades. But do your best.

The second (and most important) thing you'll need to do is communicate your wishes during the massage. This is where many customers fail, and pay the price when they receive a lackluster massage.

So how do you communicate with the therapist when they may not even understand English?

Simple. Breathing.

During your massage make a point of breathing deeply when it feels good. You can exaggerate your breathing to communicate when the therapist is doing good work. Many customers naturally do this already, and they tend to get great results. They almost always leave very happy with their experience. The best way to do it is get your breathing in rhythm with the massage. Make sure that your breath is audible to the therapist. This may seem uncomfortable to many people, but I assure you that therapists experience this all the time. In fact, therapists really appreciate the feedback. By using loud breathing, you can give the therapist a real-time meter of the quality of their work. this will only help them give you a good massage. Customers need to embrace this for their own benefit.

All of this may seem like a very uncomfortable situation you. It may seem strange to have a stranger massaging you, and you're breathing loudly. But, if you can embrace this as a form of communication, it really is not uncomfortable at all. In fact, a potentially more uncomfortable situation is you just laying there giving no feedback while your therapist massages your scalp when you do not like it. Also, its uncomfortable for the therapist as well.

Often I read massage reviews where the reviewer says something like, “I just waited for the massage to be over …” and I just picture this person laying on the table silently enduring their massage while the therapist has no idea of what they want .

Do not let it happen to you.

How to Choose the Right Massage Course for You

Choosing the right massage course can be a tricky affair. You will obviously want the best deal for yourself and will have an idea of what you want. There is a great deal of choice out there and while this is obviously a good for the standard of quality it will make your decision making process difficult. The significant number of training providers means you will need to use a selection process to help you decide.

Choosing the right massage course for you

When it comes to your selection process there are many different factors to help you choose the right massage course.

We take a look at the most significant deciding factors here;

Price – Price should always influence your decision making process. It is important because you should always aim to get value for your money. Be careful of using price to judge a massage course because cheap does not necessarily mean a bad service and a significant cost does not guarantee an excellent service, instead you should judge what is offered for the costs.

If the costs are low and yet the provider promises the world you have to wonder where they are making their money (or rather where they are cutting corners) but if they are charging a fortune you have to question where does all that money go?

It is also important that you not only consider the price of the course directly but you consider the added costs associated with the massage course, such as traveling, uniform and course materials.

Location – This is also an important deciding factor. It is also a very personal deciding factor that you have to judge for yourself. Whether you want to train in a nice area, close to home, near work and or wherever, it is a personal decision to you.

Facilities and staff – No selection process for choosing the right massage course would be complete without considering the facilities and the knowledge of the staff. You will certainly want to know that you will be training in top class facilities with all the equipment and materials you need to succeed. You will also want to know that your tutors will be enthusiastic, knowledgeable and good at their jobs, if they are not your success could possibly be affected.

Course content and flexibility- This is a factor which is more important for some people than it is for others. If you know what you want you will need to take a look at the curriculum and be sure that the course will cover your needs. If you do not really mind and not sure on what you want to learn then I suggest you ignore this factor.

Experience and results – Finally experience and results always helps when choosing the right massage course. Of course everyone started somewhere and if you are feeling brave then choosing a new provider is up to you but for the major of us we take comfort in proven results and experience. Make sure you check out the past results of any massage training provider to judge their ability to teach.

Final tips

Even after researching various massage schools you will still be unsure of which massage training course to take. Luckily because of the competition for courses there are plenty of incentives around. Take advantage of these and use any introductory offers and trial sessions available to you.

Always ask for the lights to be dimmed when getting a massage. This helps make the massage as relaxing as possible. It's not necessary for the room to be pitch black; however, the room should not be brighter than candles would provide.

Trigger-point therapy, also called neuromuscular therapy, involves the application of pressure to specific spots identified as trigger points. Trigger points feel like lumps or knots within your muscles. These parts of the body can cause a lot of pain in not only that particular place but all over the body. Pressure applied to these areas cause the muscles to relax so the pain is relieved.

The person who you will massage should shave several days prior to the session. Shaving will make the skin smooth, especially when massaging with oil. This helps your hands freely flow, helping improve feeling.

Deep tissue massages penetrate deep into muscle tissue, and this is optimal for healing pain. Slow motion in opposition to the muscle grain is used to cause friction. This helps with muscles which are always too tight or hurt often, those which are often been injured or even post issues.

Effective Ways To Reduce Cellulite

Have cellulite? So does every other woman (and some men, too!)! However, that fact is probably of little solace to you when you are feeling uncomfortable showing your legs during the summer months. And, it's not only areas like your thighs that are affected: cellulite can make its unsightly appearance on your upper arms, hips, buttocks and stomach as well.

Despite being one of the most common skin conditions, no woman is too quick to admit that she has cellulite. It's, however, a myth that only fat women are affected with cellulite: the dimpled areas on the skin are just as likely to occur on skinny women!

Unfortunately, once it forms, cellulite is very difficult to get rid of! Thus, the prevalence of various “miracle” anti-cellulite creams, exercise gadgets, and treatments – ranging from pills to lasers – which claim to “cure” cellulite. Can cellulite really be cured for good? And, if so, which methods are the most effective?

Most women would be happy just to reduce its appearance. If you are overweight, losing some of the extra weight you're carrying is probably going to reduce the size of your fat cells, which in turn can make cellulite less visible. Losing weight, however, is a double sword for women who are already at a healthy weight: since dieting can loosen the skin, this is only going to make cellulite more noticeable!

Do not write off the good old diet and exercise fix just yet! Improving your diet can go a long way in smoothing things over! A healthy diet can improve your hormonal status, firm up your skin, and flush toxins from your organism: all of this can help you battle orange peel skin. Avoiding alcohol, cigarettes, sugary and over-processed foods is a given. Do not forget to drink plenty of water!

So, on which foods should you probably the most to help you banish cellulite? Green tea is often recommended: it boosts your metabolism, inhibits fat absorption, and regulates glucose. It also contains ingredients such as caffeine and theobromine, which are known to help with cottage cheese appearance of the skin.

Eating whole grains and similar fiber-rich food is always a good idea. Any food rich in anti-oxidants and vitamin C can help. Some swear by eating berries, asparagus, and good fats such as oily fish. It may sound counter intuitive, but eating good fats can actually help your body metabolize fats and improve the appearance of the skin. Any food which is known to improve circulation, such as spices like garlic and turmeric, can help you diminish the appearance of cellulite as well.

Keeping your skin healthy and toned through diet and exercise keeps cellulite at bay! Since they say that cellulite is thirty percent inherited, you may not do away with it forever with this method alone, but it should certainly help a lot. Good diet and regular exercise are sure to boost circulation as well. And so does massaging the skin!

There are different kinds of massage nubs which can help you eliminate – or at least minimize – your trouble spots. They help in more ways than one: massaging the area exfoliates the skin (which leads to a smoother appearance), breaks up fluids benefit the skin, and improves circulation.

There is also a variety of products, ranging from creams to serums, which you are supposed to massage into your skin. These contain ingredients, such as caffeine, which are known to be effective in battling the orange peel skin. They also contain ingredients which hydrate and plump up your skin, so that the cellulite is less visible.

A breakdown in collagen, the protein which forms the skin's connective tissue, is partly to blame for cellulite. It stands to reason, therefore, that strengthening the collagen fibers in your skin can help diminish the appearance of cellulite. You can try bumping up your diet protein take and applying cosmetic products that replenish your skin's natural collagen supplies.

Cosmetic treatments, such as mesotherapy, are often used. In recent times, therapies including laser and radio frequency systems have shown some promise in treating cellulite. These systems combine massage with diode laser energy, radio frequency, or infrared light. Liposuction, although a very popular surgical treatment, does not help with cellulite, and in some cases it can even make it look worse.

Chiropractic Care for the Family

Dedicated parents work hard to ensure that their families are healthy, happy and strong. Working toward a goal of overall wellbeing means pursuing regular health checks – like visiting the dentist and having your eyes checked. Maintaining optimal health involves seeking out a range of expertise, rather than focusing only on a particular treatment or discipline. The complexities of our bodies and the diverse stress factors we contend with call for a more holistic approach to healing. Chiropractic focuses on the big picture, seeking to strengthen the body's natural healing powers by optimizing the performance of its nervous system. It's an approach that can benefit every member of the family, of any age.

Addressing Everyday Wear and Tear

The goal of chiropractic care is to correct spinal misalignment for optimum wellbeing. When the bones of the spine (vertebrae) are misaligned, they may put pressure on the spinal cord – which in turn disposes essential signals sent from the brain to every organ, cell and tissue through the body. Although individuals often associated chiropractic care with adult patients, the treatments can greatly assist in promoting vitality and wellbeing in young children and adolescents. Young people are often quite physically active, involved in sports, high-impact recreational activities, or learning skills for the first time – like riding a bike. Early on, our bodies experience wear and tear from what most would consider routine milestones or behaviors. Chiropractic check-ups help keep the spine in alignment, which in turn helps children maintain strong and healthy bodies that are better able to heal whatever bumps and scrapes may come.

Optimizing The Body's Performance

At every stage of life, a chiropractor's healing hands offer each family member a solid foundation for wellness. By starting care early on, children come to understand and appreciate the essential role of spinal alignment in optimizing the body's performance. Chiropractic exercises emphasizes this connection, helping students understand how vertebral misalignments, or “subluxations,” impair the nervous system by obstructing the brain's route of communication to the rest of the body. When the directory is “blocked,” the body's ability to perform well and heal itself is compromised, leaving a door open for illness and disease.

Regular chiropractic visits help launch young people on the path of lifelong wellness, granting them a clear understanding of the role the spelling plays in maintaining overall health.Just as we protect our teeth with regular cleanings and dental exams, so we should consult a chiropractor to Ensure that our bodies are performing at their best. Preventative, ongoing care is a best practice at any age.

Becoming a Chiropractic Humanitarian

Chiropractic is founded on the understanding that interference to the body's nervous system can directly and negatively affect overall health and wellness. Health consequences may take the form of overt disease and medical conditions – or they may present themselves in more subtle, less easily observed ways. The spinal cord is central to the practice of chiropractic because it functions as the main pathway for the body's internal messages, signals sent by the brain to each organ, tissue and cell. When the bones of the spine are misaligned, the signals sent by the brain are interrupted – and the body has a much harder time maintaining optimal health and healing itself.

With an awareness that chiropractic health is essential for our overall wellbeing, practitioners are often compelled to give back – to help patients who for geographic or economic reasons, can not access professional chiropractic care. Because service to others is such an important concept to chiropractors, some colleges even include it in their mission statements. Chiropractic colleges often serve the community by providing quality chiropractic care for free or reduced prices and by partnering with community organizations. Colleges also serve the profession by offering continuing education programs to doctors of chiropractic and by participating in professional and educational organizations.

Doctors of chiropractic often live out their service following graduation. For example, 2001 chiropractic college graduate Marlene Mahipat practices three days a week and devotes the rest of the week to charitable endeavors. She has established two charitable foundations. Wherever she goes, even on vacation, Mahipat's compassion for others becomes evident. During her own childhood, Dr. Mahipat suffered many ills. She found healing through giving and service to others; this drives her community service.

Graduates of chiropractic training interested in using their well-trained healing hands for charitable purposes can find humanitarian projects overseas or right in their own backyards. Most cities have a range of ongoing events such as spinal screenings, health fairs and presentations, nursing home volunteer positions, and opportunities to administrator chiropractic care at local mission Shelters. Practitioners can join international organizations or build on the charitable networks that they participate in as students.

Many chiropractic training programs, like the one at Sherman College of Chiropractic, incorporated humanitarian initiatives into their education programs. Curricula and the profession's “Chiropractic Oath” reinvigorate the right of all people to optimal health care, and the critical role spinal alignment plays in our overall wellbeing. Learning first-hand the importance of giving back and the impact their skills can make, Sherman College interns regularly participate in local events including Special Olympics, Adopt-a-Highway, Kids Day America, Special Food Drives, and Lunch & Learn training programs.
