Does Your Remedial Massage Therapist Or Health Practitioner Operate With Ethical Principles?

Although I am about to describe what type of ethical principles your remedial massage therapist should abide by, it really applies to any type of health practitioner you may visit. It applies to your doctor, your chiropractor and your physiotherapist. So the questions that I am going to present you with, I want you to keep in mind when you visit any type of health practitioner future.

Health Practitioners Have Ethical Responsibilities

Your health practitioner has an ethical responsibility to keep your care as the top priority. For example, if you go to see your therapist for a pain in your hip and they have you come back every week for three months but your problem really is not getting any better.

Do you consider this ethical? I do not.

I have ethical parameters that I have set for my practice. That is, if my clients are not seeing a reduction in symptoms and an improvement in their condition within three treatments, I will either think about what I am not doing and try something else. Or I will send them to another practitioner in my network for a second opinion and some alternative treatment.

This is my ethical responsibility to you to keep your care as the top priority, and it should be a responsibility for all health practitioners as far as I'm concerned.

The reason I want you to keep these things in mind is that, I have seen many people going to a health practitioner trying to overcome a problem, only to be going there for six months or more and not getting any results. This is not right. As I've pointed out above, your therapist or practitioner has an ethical responsibility to you.

Ask Questions When You Are Not Seeing The Results You Should

If you are not getting the results that you want within a reasonable time frame, then you should be asking your health practitioner's motives. Are they just trying to wean more money out of you? Are they scared to lose you as a customer if they refer you on to someone else? Do they simply not know what to do or how to treat your condition properly?

The thing is, no practitioner knows everything. We all have our limitations and that's okay. As long as we know when and where it is time to send our clients elsewhere, or seek another opinion. Do not get locked into having treatment that you feel is not working. And do not feel guilty or bad about saying something to your practitioner if you want an explanation, a better result, or more feedback.

You pay good money to have a good service delivered to you, so make sure your health practitioner is operating with ethical principles and can provide you with a reasonable estimate in the time frame it is going to take for you to get better. What the chance of recovery are for you. If there are other things you can do to help progress your recovery quicker. Just be sure that your remedial therapist or health practitioner has your care as a top priority.

Zero Gravity Massage Chairs – What The Technology Is And How We Benefit

The thought of Zero Gravity was created out of the NASA space program to be able to deal with the particular problems of large compression forces felt by Astronauts while they launch into space. Astronauts have been plagued with exhaustion during the launch procedure due to Gravities natural compression upon the human body especially the human backbone. As a result of extensive research NASA has perfected the “Neutral Body Posture” position that's perfect for even distributing sources on the human body (entity body rather than the backbone) as well as subtly placing the human body in an an enhanced condition of-relaxation . This specific discovery in dealing with gravity forces may be applied to numerous facets of health and wellness therapy.

The “Neutral Body Posture” is the ideal post for an individual aiming to become thoroughly relaxed. Our bodies requires a reclined position elevating the feet above the heart as well as creating a torso-to-leg angle of roughly 128 degrees with a variation with +/- 7 degrees. This position has also been termed as the “Anti-Gravity” in addition to “90/90” position. As a result of reasonable investigation was done from the Research Center for Sports and Healthcare Technology at Ritsumeikan University the “Natural Body Posture” position has been proved to be the perfect post for physical relaxation.

Zero Gravity Loungers have taken total advantage with the relief in addition to relaxation made possible when the body collects the Natural Body Posture position. With these innovations a number of other relaxation benefits in addition to health benefits happen during this posturing. The human body encounters much less pressure around the backbone simply because of the distribution of forces all through the body, reduced muscle tension because of the natural relaxation effect of the posture, significantly less strain around the heart as this has to work significantly less to pump blood through the body, enhanced lung capacity due to the fact of the expanded lungs within the neutral position, and improved circulation in addition to blood oxygen levels because of the ripple effect of greater lung capacity in addition to reduced tension within the heart. All of this really is made possible by just raising the legs above the heart as well as assuming a zero gravity position taking major stress of off the backbone.

Listed Below Are These Ideas in Greater Depth

Maximum Relaxation in the Neck and Back
A person's spine is designed in an 'S' formed curve and separated into three regions ie neck, upper back, as well as lower back. When there is not stress within the muscles with the spine at any curve, we achieve a natural position of the backbone. In a Zero Gravity Lounger, the torso and thigh's are in excellent position, the feet relaxed above the level of the heart and head, in addition to the hips, also the ankles develop a ninety degree angle between them. This results in a neutral position with the spell, where gravity forces never affect this. Its design supports the natural shape of the backbone combined with the upper and lower back. Thus the neck and back are free of muscle strain and pain.

Relief to Muscles
In a range of relaxation postures we unconsciously put tension on our lower back (think sitting at a workspace all day, then sitting on a chair at your home.) Any time a person goes into a Zero Gravity position the muscles are released from this strain and oxygen rich blood can relax the muscles entirely.

Lung Expansion
When ever an open angle is generated between your torso and thighs, more space is created for the diaphragm to expand. This leads to an increase in oxygen from the air and expanded lungs.

Significantly less Stress on the Heart
In a zero gravity position the blood circulation through the heart actually changes. When a human is in an upright position this requires the heart to operate against the gravitational forces pumping blood up from the legs. In a highly reclaimed position the situation is clearly reversed. Blood flows into the heart with the assistance of gravity as opposed to against this, essentially accommodating the heart's natural function.

Massage Therapy: Healthy and Relaxing

Getting a good massage is one way to pamper or reward yourself after a hard and stressful day. It is one way for you to relax. However, massage is not just for relaxation. As years pass by, many studies were made to prove that massage helps improve one's health. Thus, massage therapy became part of the medical world in assisting patients to treat pain, stress, or in rehabilitating patients with injuries.

Massage therapy is not a new medical discovery. Even during the ancient times, massage was used and known as the “art of rubbing”. The massage therapy you know today was first introduced in United States back in 1850 and became popular, especially among athletes, in 1970. And until today, this becomes an alternative way for people to have a healthy lifestyle.

Then, why do people choose to undergo this kind of medical treatment? It is because people can get a lot of health benefits from it. And what are those benefits? Studies conducted by various medical schools and some research funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) have shown that massage is an effective way to reduce anxiety, depression, or stress, even helps lower blood pressure, and can stimulate weak muscle to make it more active (in case of any muscle related illness or injury). It can also help tie back pains, headaches or migraines, and neck pains. Other results suggested that massage affects not only the physical reaction of the body but also the chemicals-like endorphins, chemical produced by the pituitary gland when you exercise, eat spicy food, feel excited or feel pain-that it produces.

It is indeed an alternative way-if not an additional prescription by doctors-to improve physical and mental health. But before you take any massage therapy, you should first consider the tips below.

* Find the right therapists. Do not just go into massage clinics or houses without knowing if the therapists are licensed and properly trained to perform a massage. This is very important especially when you have some serious illness or injury. You do not want to worsen any of your pain by just getting the wrong therapist, right? So, it is best to ask your doctor before going on your own. But if you just want a mere relaxation, you can just come to spa and enjoy their massage services.

* Next, always bear in mind that before you take any massage, the therapists will ask you to explain the problems you feel in the body. Tell them exactly where or what parts are in pain. Also tell them if you have sensitive skin or allergy. There might be massage products or certain massage techniques that might affect your body and give side effects.

* And lastly, do not take massage if you have flu or migraine for it might worsen what you feel. Also keep in mind not to take a massage on the area of the body where there are wounds, fractures, or surgery. And if you find hard to breathe when lying face down, you can always ask the therapist to let you lie in sideways.

No matter what purpose you have in mind in taking a massage, whether for relaxation or for treating any illness, consider the beneficial effects of massage therapy to your mind and body. So, insert a time to visit a spa or any massage places in your busy schedule to pamper yourself and improve your health.

Selecting A Local Massage Therapist

If you have heard that massage therapy can help you with your aches and pains, then you are correct. But when it comes to selecting a massage therapist in your local area, how do you go about it, and which one do you choose?

I know in my area here on the Central Coast of Australia, there are probably hundreds of massage therapists. They all do different techniques, have different skills, cater to different customers, and have very different levels of expertise.

This makes it really difficult for people in the local area to know exactly where to go. Quite often people are left wandering from therapist to therapist searching for someone to help them with their needs. And sometimes they even give up trying!

This is a terrible thing because after working as a professional massage therapist for over 6 years, I have been witness to the transformational effect that massage can have on people's lives.

So how do you avoid all this trouble and select a local massage therapist?

Know what you want

Before selecting a therapist you really have to know exactly what you want. Do you want relief from an ache or pain? Do you want to go and be pampered and relax? Do you want a muscle expert who can help with a chronic problem? Do you want to see a specialist who can focus on a specific concern? Or do you want a generalist who can give you a whole body massage and loosen you up from head to toe?

This is a very important first point because if you are looking for someone who specializes in fixing chronic pain, then you will not select a therapist that works in a spa. Why? Because usually these types of therapists only do relaxation massage and therefore they will not be able to help fix your pain.

Be clear about what you want so you know the kind of income you want to receive from your treatment. Then you can look around for a therapist and make a short list of possible therapists that can give you the treatment you want.

Talk to the therapist

Before making an appointment with a local therapist be sure to talk to them about what you want. If you are struggling with chronic back pain, ask them if they have deal with these types of issues. Ask them what they can do for you and if they can deliver on results. You will get a good sense of the therapist's expertise from asking these types of questions.

If the therapist is more of a generalist, they will not provide you with enough information because they simply will not have the experience or skill to deal with your problem effectively. And if the therapist is a relaxation therapist working out of a spa, then you will know that they are not the type of therapist to select. Remember you have already decided what you want, so make sure you ask the right questions and feel confident to choose a therapist who can give you exactly that.

Ask around

Without a doubt one great way to find a therapist in your local area is to consult with your friends, family and collections. Sure they may not know a therapist in your area, but it does not hurt to ask. And quite often people are surprised because their friends have heard of someone really good in the local area. Word of mouth recommendation is a powerful indicator that your local therapist has a good reputation and can deliver the results you are after.

If you follow these few words of advice, then I am sure you will be one step closer to selecting exactly the right massage therapist to look after you and your needs.

What Is Acute Pain And How Can Remedial Massage Help?

What is acute pain?

Acute pain is a pain that is recent, a sudden sunset of pain, something that has been caused by an accident, a fall, an injury, or something of that nature. Acute pain is usually quite strong and ranges from a sharp nerve pain or shooting pain, to a very strong ache. It can be made worse by certain movements and may restrict you from doing things.

Some examples of the types of incidences that cause the onset of acute pain are accidents like slipping and jarring the body, taking a fall, a car accident or whiplash injury, or taking a hit in a sporting game and so forth.

These are some of the obvious things that cause instant pain but sometimes acute pain seems to appear out of now. For example, the sudden sunset of lower back pain or neck spasms. You might just get out of the car the wrong way and your back goes into spasm and you can not stand up straight. You might wake up from a nights sleep and you can not move your neck.

If it something that you do not have on an everyday basis the pain is classified as an acute condition and can be treated quickly and effectively with massage in most cases.

How Can Remedial Massage Can Help With Acute Pain?

Generally the majority of acute pain conditions are caused by muscle spasms. Sure they may feel like they are incredibly painful because when muscles spasm they can also entrap and irritate nerves. But unless you have broken a bone, 98% of the time you will be suffering from a muscular issue.

The good thing is that because the problem is new to the body, acute pain conditions are generally easy to treat and do not leave any residual problems. Massage therapy is the treatment used to alleviate muscular problems. Remedial massage acts by stimulating the muscles that are in spasm so they release. By stimulating the right muscles the body will then correct itself, releasing the muscle spasms and bringing your body back to normal.

It really is that simple yet incredibly powerful. But one little word of advice is that if you do suffer an acute pain condition, make sure you get some treatment straight away. Do not leave it to get worse because it may then become a chronic problem that will affect more parts of the body. Acute conditions are easy to fix but chronic problems are not so easy.

Get treatment immediately and if you are unsure about what to do, just phone your remedial therapist and get some advice. They will be able to recommend the procedure for your injury or condition.

Remedial Massage: A Few Massive Benefits For You

There are a lot of different styles of massage therapy. When you look in your local phone book I bet you'll see massage advertisements that have remedial massage, sports massage, deep tissue massage, Thai, hot stone, relaxation, and the list goes on.

Surprising to most people, even though they categorize every technique into different slots. I put remedial massage as an umbrella term for most of these techniques. Remedial means that the techniques the therapist uses can remedy muscular and physical problems in the body. With the techniques they use they can change or have a positive therapeutic effect on the body.

So massage styles like deep tissue and sports are also remedial, because they can bring about change in the body's muscular and structural system. Certainly some massage techniques such as relaxation or hot stone are really not part of remedial massage, though they are still the therapeutic on a relaxing level.

Remedial massage can:

Greatly relieve muscular aches and pains
It does not matter if it's an aching neck, arm, knee or foot, most general aches and pains are caused by tight, contracted muscles. Sometimes it may feel like you have something more sinister going on, but muscles can cause a variety of symptoms from sharp pain to a dull ache. Massage helps to break up the tight contracted muscles; therefore your pain is removed.

Help fix chronic chronic problems or at least greatly reduce the painful symptoms
A lot of people think they have to live with their chronic pain problems. But having worked with numerous clients with chronic problems, I am here to tell you this is entirely untrue. Chronic problems come as a result of chronically tight and contracted muscles. The problems have progressed one step beyond general ache and pain to incorporate a variety of muscles that are compensating and causing nerve irritation and inflammation, usually around the joints. Once your remedial massage therapist corrects these muscular compensations, your body is brought back to normal and your chronic pain miraculously disappears. Or at the very least your painful symptoms will be vastly reduced and manageable.

Provide deep muscular release from the build up of stress and promote relaxation
Although stress is an emotional response to environmental stimulation, stress has a huge effect on the body especially on the muscles. Have you ever noticed when you are stressed that you may hold your shoulders very stiff? Or maybe you notice that your neck feels tight? And often you feel more fatigued? This is because your muscles contract and tighten when you are stressed. So you can use remedial massage to get a really thorough release of all your muscles and this will immediately promote relaxation and calming.

Improve flexibility and mobility
Remedial massage is great for older people to help improve their flexibility and mobility. But it's not only old people who need help with getting their body moving better, it applies to young and middle-aged people as well. The body's mobility and flexibility naturally Declines, as we get older. And due to the fact that most of us do not do enough exercise, our bodies will become stiff. Remedial massage can help to keep your body moving and functioning to its optimum capacity, with mobility and flexibility being two very important factors to consider.

These are just four amazing things remedial massage can do for you. It has so many great benefits that I simply can not list them all here. But I hope you can see what great value it can provide to your life by using it as a treatment method with your pain or problems. Or simply to keep your body moving and making you feel better all round.

Massage Chair Therapy On Demand

Everyone wants instant gratification these days. Why should you have to wait to go to a scheduled appointment on a particular day just to get a massage? Would not it be nice to get a treatment anytime you wish on demand? This is the convenience that is offered by having a massage chair.

Many people understand that there are very positive health benefits to getting regular massage treatments. Many studies have been done which show that regular therapy treatments help reduce the symptoms of stress, reduce stiffness and pain and improve overall well-being.

The trouble that most people have is getting a regular therapy treatment. Everyone seems to be busier than ever. Finding time out of our busy day is probably one of the biggest challenges to getting regular treatments.

It can be very time-consuming to get a massage from a masseuse. Most likely you have to go to a specific place at a specific time. You have to travel to and from this location as well as receive your therapy treatment.

A massage recliner can save you a lot of time by having one in your home or office. The massaging lounger is available for your use any time without an appointment. You get the convenience of getting a therapy treatment at the touch of a button.

A massaging recliner offers you a variety of different techniques. Manufacturers of these recliners continue to add more and more massaging actions. It is common to find chairs that perform shiatsu, Swedish, reflexology, acupressure, sports therapy and deep tissue.

They are comfortable and easy to use. Most massage chairs have powered recline. You can set the angle of the chair back and raise the leg rest. This makes it fun and easy to get comfortable before starting your therapy.

Could Your Computer Be Hurting You?

In today's world we are hooked on computers, myself included. Most people spend their whole work day on the computer and then come home and play on it more for personal fun and social networking sites like one of my favorites, Facebook. The downfall of all this time on the computer is that we do not take the time to be aware of our posture using the computer, nor do we take a moment to step away and give our body and minds a much needed break, even if it is just for 5 minutes. With this, most of us find ourselves in a bit of pain from the all day use of the keyboard and the mouse. This pain could be in your upper shoulders, your forearms, wrists and for some in the fingers (ever feel that numb sensation). Sometimes these muscle issues start showing up right away. Sometimes they may not be for years.

I'm sure if you take a good look at your computer set-up and your posture, you'll quickly realize that things are not ergonomically correct. There are some ways to help yourself have better posture and be more ergonomically correct. These simple measures can help deter you from compromising your body.

  1. Receive regular massages
  2. Acquire ergonomically correct products to support your wrists, arms, lower back and even for your legs.
  3. Take breaks away from the computer. Even a quick 1 to 2 minute walk down the hall will refresh your body, get the blood flowing and even refresh your mind.
  4. Bring the mouse and keyboard closer to your body so that your not reaching for either.
  5. Take a few moments to stretch. Here are a few suggestions:
    • Doorway Stretch: Place your forearm against the frame of a doorway with elbow up. Step forward with the same leg that matches the forearm and lunge. Hold and gently come back. Switch sides.
    • Deltoid Stretch: Pull the right arm across the front of the body using the left arm. Make sure you stretched arm has the thumb facing down. Hold and then switch arms.
    • Tricep and Lat Stretch: Point your right elbow toward the ceiling, then lean the upper torso to the left. You may grab the elbow with the left hand for a further stretch. Hold and switch arms.
    • Wrist Stretch: Hold arm straight out with hand upside down. Gently pull down on the fingers to stretch. Switch hands.

I'm sure one of your first thoughts is how could I fit this into my day? Or I can not do these, what if the boss sees me and thinks I'm being unproductive? Please realize that these simple things do not take up much time and will help you be more productive. If your body is not in pain you will not be spending the time complaining about it, you will get more done and you'll feel better. In the end it is your body and you only have one chance to take care of it.

Massage Just for the Wealthy – Invest in Yourself

Many people look at massage as a luxury, something to treat yourself with once a year for your birthday or anniversary, or even something that only the 'wealthy' do. I've had many people ask, or even state and assume that my clients must only be wealthy clients. Their expectation is that only the 'rich' can afford massage. If that's the case, then why are they so many spas and massage therapists? There can not be that many 'rich' people keeping these places in business can there? Ya, I do not think so.

Massage is for most everyone including kids and animals (and yes I've massaged kids, dogs, cats and a horse). It does not matter what your checking account balance is, it's a whole variety of people that get massages. For my business I have the range of clients that yes others would consider wealthy. I also have middle-income as well as the other end of the spectrum of clients that live solely on disability and social security income. Would they be considered wealthy? Not in a financial sense, no. In a healthy, well-being sense? Absolutely! And that goes for all my clients, the amount of money they have does not factor into the massage I do. I consider every client I have wealthy in who they are and the type of person they are. There is a quote I heard a while ago that I think relates to this topic: First Wealth is Health ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Massage is something people do for themselves, it is an investment into their own health, something that you do for you to help keep your body and mind in check. What one person may consider expensive another does not. I may consider paying $ 60 or more for pants expensive while someone else freely spends their money on $ 100 pants. Part of it really comes down to what you want to spend your money on. Do you want to spend money on you? Do you think you're worth the cost of massage? Do you think your health is worth it? Well you should think you're worth it, because you are! What I really think it brings down to is that we are taught not to ever be selfish and we consider massage a selfish act. Again, it's not and your first wealth is your health and it's an investment into you! So go ahead, make that investment! Are not you worth it?

A Common Cause of Low Back and Sciatic Pain – The Piriformis

As a licensed massage therapist, I specialize in chronic pain and injury management using deep tissue massage therapy. Most of my clients come in with a common complaint: pain in the low back, hips (primarily on one side), and / or shooting pain or numbness down the back of the leg.

More than two million Americans suffer either from back pain or a form of sciatica that is often misdiagnosed and improperly treated. Many suffer from pain for months or years without a proper diagnosis. I work with these symptoms so frequently that I have noticed some common characteristics with this all-too-common pain complaint.

The most common character I find are aggravated trigger points (TrPs) in the piriformis muscle. Piriformis trigger points are often confused for a herniated disc, sciatica, or other back issues, and many sufferers undergo unnecessary and costly tests, injections, and surgeries.

What is the piriformis?

The piriformis muscle is a small external rotator of the hip whose function primarily is to turn the knee and foot outward. It lies deep within the gluteal muscles, originates from the sacral spine, and attaches to the greater trochanter of the femur – the big bony “bump” on the outside top of the thigh. The sciatic nerve passes benefit through an opening called the sciatic notch.

In non-weight bearing activities, foot unloaded and hip extended, the piriformis rotates the thigh outward. When the hip is flexed at 90 degrees it aids in hip abduction.

In weight bearing activities, foot loaded, the pirifomis is often needed to control rapid medial rotation of the thigh – for example, as the foot strikes the ground during walking or running, the knee turns inward.

Piriformis Trigger Points (TrPs)

The myofascial pain component includes pain in the low back, groin, buttock, and hip. A TrP may cause the muscle to compress and irritate the sciatic nerve, causing the pain to travel along the course of the nerve. The pain may radiate down the back of the leg and into the hamstrings, the calf muscles, and possibly the foot. The pain may initially be confused with a hamstring strain. Weakness, stiffness and a general restriction of movement are also quite common. Tingling, numbness, or shooting pains down the leg can also be experienced. Symptoms tend to be aggravated by prolonged sitting or by intense activity.

Piriformis TrPs are predominately caused by a shortening or tightening of the piriformis muscle. Pirimformis TrPs are commonly associated with sports that require a lot of running, change of direction, or weight-bearing activity. Pirimformis TrPs can result from acute overload (as when catching oneself from a fall), from repetitive overload (as with the rapid internal rotation of the weight bearing experienced by walkers and runners with poor biomechanics), or from sustained overload (as when holding the leg bent and turned out for prolonged periods while driving a car or working at a desk). Sciatic pain from piriformis TrPs is also a common complaint during pregnancy.

The piriformis muscle is responsible for the symptoms of pain by projecting pain from activation of the TrPs and by nerve entrapment upon the sciatic nerve. Once TrPs are activated, the piriformis muscle begins to put pressure on the sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve runs under (and sometimes through) the piriformis muscle on its way out of the pelvis. The piriformis muscle can squeeze and irritate the sciatic nerve in this area, leading to the symptoms of sciatica.

“Even though your back is flawless, the piriformis muscle in the buttock may tighten, go into spasm, and entrap the sciatic nerve, causing the same symptoms and misery that come with herniated disks.” Huffington Post

Treatment and Prevention

The first two steps in treating piriformis TrPs can provide the most significant and immediate relief: deep tissue massage with stretching of the external rotators of the hip. Deep tissue massage techniques such as myofascial release and trigger point therapy are highly effective at reducing active trigger points. Once the TrP is released, there will be a significant reduction in pain.

Following up the massage with flexibility training will help loosen the muscle and help prevent a return of the TrP. I have found that it takes between four and ten massage sessions to move out of the acute pain phase from piriformis TrPs. It may be shorter or longer depending on the cause and severity of the initial injury.

For long-term prevention of piriformis TrPs, self massage and flexibility will be your most invaluable tools. Use a ball (preferably a tennis ball for beginners) for self trigger point therapy, and stretch the piriformis muscle and other external rotators of the hip. With each stretch it is important to breathe into the stretch and only stretch to slight discomfort … NOT PAIN.

Other suggestions to prevent Piriformis TrPs

Our bodies were designed to move. It is important to keep moving. Try not to sit down for more than an hour at a time. Stand up, take breaks, go for a walk, and stretch your body through the day. Lack of movement causes muscle dysfunction. Proper movement is key to an active healthy life. With an exercise program that focuses on functional movement patterns with core strength and stabilization, regular full body massage (self massage or professional), and full body flexibility you will reduce your chances for chronic pain and injuries.

Running / walking

Change the way you walk and run. Heel strike is the most common dysfunction in running / walking gait. As soon as the heel strikes the ground, the knee rapidly moves into an external rotation followed by rapid inward rotation. This places repetitive trauma on the piriformis muscle and leads to TrP formation and activation. I suggest hiring a coach who instructs forefoot or midfoot strike running form.

Replace your shoes. Modern running shoes promotion heel strike. I advocate shoes with as little cushion and arch support as your body can handle.

Be smart with a shoe and form transition. Your body has adapted to how you walk and the shoes you wear. A fast transition without proper instruction and training raises your risk of significant injury. Below is a great article about what is wrong with your running / walking shoes.

Massage Techniques for Beginners

Everyone wants more attention from their partner. As the saying goes, you have to give a little to get a little. A massage is a great way for partners to connect. It improves blood and lymphatic circulation, loosens tight muscles and releases endorphins and serotonin, helping your partner to feel happy and relaxed.

Not everyone knows how to give a good massage. There are a few tricks to know to make it a little bit better. If you want your partner to really enjoy the experience you should put some thought into setting the mood. It sounds cheesy but turn off the phone, shut the curtains, put on some quiet music and dim the lights. You want to create a comfortable setting where you will not have to worry about being interrupted.

Find a good massage oil to reduce friction on the skin. Do not just pull something out of the bathroom cupboard. Moisturizers and hand creams absorb too quickly so you need to keep reapplying which can be disruptive. Vaseline is too thick and sticky. There is a huge range of cheap nice smelling massage oils available.

Be careful not to get massage oil on your partners clothing. Either have them remove their clothing or be sure to wipe up excess oils. The most important thing is your partner should be comfortable. Get women to tie up their hair so it will not get oily.

There are a number of techniques but the key is moderate pressure. A massage it to relax the muscles not the skin. In order to avoid irritating the skin or tickling apply these methods below:

Soft and fluid strokes should be used to start. It helps to relax your partner. Use the palm of your hand and gently apply pressure to the muscles across the shoulders, upper and lower back. It is good on the tissue and feels pleasant.

Heart strokes: Using slightly incremented pressure, place your hands flat on either side of your partner's spine. Slide your hands upwards, maintaining pressure. At the shoulder blades move your hand to the side and slide them down the rib cage, making a rough heart shape.

Circle strokes: This stroke is very relaxing and usually a favorite with women. Place your hand flat on your partner's back, apply pressure with one hand moving clockwise and the other hand moving anti-clockwise. Movements should be firm but slow. This stroke often leaves recipients feeling sleepy.

Kneading strokes: This is a little more complicated and there is room to end up simply pinching your partner, which is unpleasant. The idea is to squeeze the muscles in a gentle and rhythmic way. If done properly it can be very relaxing and is generally the preferred stroke for men. Do not use this stroke for too long as it may lead to discomfort.

The most important part of a massage is allowing your partner to enjoy it. When you finish give them time to relax and enjoy what you have just done. Do not just expect them to jump up return the favor immediately or you ruin the whole gesture.

What Is Causing Your Pain?

There are usually multiple factors that lead to pain:

• how much you move

• the way you move

• how you manage stress

• what kind of shoes you wear

• your history of injuries Each of these things play a role in how you feel.

What is causing your pain?

This is a question I attempt to answer many times each week. My most common answer is:

DURATION X REPETITION = PAIN When movement hurts, it can usually be traced back either to a repetitive movement pattern or a repetitive lack of movement pattern – how much time you either repeat a single movement or maintain a specific position. Both repetitive movement and lack of movement create pressures within the fascial system.

Fascia is a three-dimensional continuous web of connective tissue that wraps around your body from the bottom of your feet to the top of your head. Fascia surrounds your muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones and organs. Fascia is the organ system that gives your body shape and plays a fundamental role in your posture.

The way you move each day determines the shape and well-being of your fascia and the structure it supports, your body. If, for instance, you sit for long hours each week (duration and repetition), the fascia in your hips, shoulders, and neck will begin to form adhesions at the folds of your fascia in these positions. These adhesions impinge upon your body's “working parts;” bind the head, shoulders, and pelvis into a forward position; create trigger points; and restrict range of motion.

Over time and repetition, these adhesions become semi-permanent obstacles that change your body's shape. The change in shape shifts the balance of the body, placing stress and strain through. This leads to the intensity, discomfort, and pain that many people feel in their back, knees, neck, or shoulders.

Given sufficient time and repetition, it may lead to more serious structural injuries, ie, tears of the soft tissue in the shoulder, herniation of vertebrae, or wearing down of the cartilage in the knees and hips.

Below is a short list of tools that you can utilize to help remove adhesions, restore joint mobility, improve circulation, and reduce chronic injury and pain.

1. Deep tissue massage therapy is one of the most effective methods of breaking down painful adhesions in the body. Deep tissue therapies such as myofascial release and trigger point therapy can remove painful trigger points, restore functional range of motion, speed the healing process, and reduce chronic pain. Recommended weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly deep tissue therapy session.

2. Foam roller therapy is a fantastic tool for breaking down restrictive fascia, improving flexibility and functional range of motion, assisting the recovery and healing process, and reducing chronic pain. A foam roller is, in my opinion, the best investment for your fitness and health.

3. Corrective exercise is vital to regain and maintain full movement patterns. The body is designed to move with great ranges of motion with agility, stability, speed, and power. It is important to use your body in the way it was designed to move.

Rolling, tapping and kneading are the most common movements associated with these rollers. Therefore, upon purchase, you have to make sure that its function will surely meet your needs.

Another interesting high-end feature of chair recliners is the presence of body position sensors. It is not common to all massage equipment but some chairs have this kind of property. It enables the chair to determine where you are while lying or sitting in a recliner. Once you will about to move, the sensor will able to detect it and the program will change automatically. This is actually great but the cost can be expensive. Having a massage chair at home is really wonderful especially if you have the latest model.
