The Main Benefits That You Can Get From Massage

If you want to know all the benefits that you can get from massage, you would probably be amazed at the intense number of such benefits. This is regardless if you are using a robotic massage chair or if you are getting the massage therapy from a professional therapist. To sum all these benefits up, here are three of the main benefits that you can enjoy from a massage therapy.

Getting rid of stress and tension is one of the biggest benefits that you can enjoy from getting a massage therapy and this is unarguable. A lot of people have already experienced this and they have already proven its effect on their bodies. So if they have already experienced the good things, why would not you try it as well? After a very long and busy day at work or at school, you would definitely feel very tired. Sometimes, your body will not be the only one to will feel the stress and tension, your mind too! You certainly deserve to get a reward for all the hard work. A relaxing and soothing massage is unduly one of the best rewards that you can give to yourself considering that it will not only eliminate stress and tension physically, it will also help in relaxing your mind. And as a result of having a relaxed mind and body, you can prevent wrinkles and you can also think properly.

Because your body and mind will be in a relaxed mode after getting a massage, you can then get a good night sleep. This is very important because not getting enough amount of sleep may ruin your day as soon as you wake up. In the morning, you will have all the energy that you will need when you had enough sleep during the night. And when you go to work or in school, you will be productive and efficient on whatever it is that you are going to do. In other words, stress and tension which will result in getting a poor amount of sleep can greatly affect your performance and productivity on the next day.

On the other hand, if you are suffering from arthritis, back pain and other conditions that can be results of lack of exercise and improper posture, then massage will be of great help for you. If you feel any pain on a certain part of your body, the first thing that you should do is have it checked by your doctor and ask if it is going to be appropriate for you to get regular massage therapy. Massage is a good way to alleviate pain but you have to be certain about it first to avoid making the condition worse. It can also help in gradually healing injured muscles and tissues. And when everything is fine, then you can get a regular massage together with exercise and proper diet, for best results. You should not take anything for granted because a certain condition can quickly become serious if not given enough attention.

From the Range of Portable Massage Tables How Does One Select the Best Folding Massage Table

If you are in need of a folding massage table you have to decide on a number of things before you purchase one.

  • How often will I use it?
  • What is the weight of the largest client that is likely to lie on it?
  • How will I transport it?
  • What kind of massage do I do?
  • Do I want my client to sit up and have back support.?
  • What other accessories do I need?
  • What is my budget

All of these have direct bearing on the decisions you will make regarding a portable massage table.

The frequency of use is important. If it is used often it is essential that the construction is strong and robust enough to take being folded up, transported, unfolded, stressed during the treatment. Then it must be moved again and again, without deteriorating and becoming unstable. It is also important that the folding massage table is capable of maintenance and that maintenance will be effective.

The maximum probable weight of your heviest client must be borne in mind. A table collapsing or bending while in use may result in injury to the client. Precisely what you do not need as this would damage your reputation you may find yourself liable for a claim. The equipment you choose must be man enough for the job.

If you have your own vehicle with a large enough trunk you have no problems. However if you are using alternative means of transport you need to be sure that it all fits into one, easily transportable bag that is not too heavy to carry in one load.

Some Japanese therapies have different requirements from physiotherapy, for example. Physiotherapy requires a lot more pulling, kneading and pounding than many alternative therapies which are more gentle. The portable massage table you choose must reflect this difference.

If you do work on feet, legs and even arms you may require your patient to be sitting upright rather that just prostrate. This means you will definitely need a folding massage table which also has a few positions for back support.

These are also considered when looking for accessories. If you work on the neck a face guard is essential. Arm shelves are also useful if you need your client's shoulders off the bed. And so on. Consider all of the things you will need to do a professional job.

Your budget, while important, is a consideration that needs to take into account all the above factors. Remember that buying a portable massage table without the features you need may be an expensive error as the inadequacies will prevent you from doing your job correctly.

Three Main Importances of Having a Massage

Some people think massage or going to Spa is a luxury. Well, in a way yes this is a luxury that the body definitely describes, but the notion that this is a luxury because of the excess amount of money you spend for it is a wrong notice. There are various Spa clinics that offer affordable rates that most people in the working class can avail. There are even massage chairs that one can buy to have full and immediate access to a great massage in the comfort of their home.

Massage is not just a luxury in fact there are different advantages of having a great massage and here are three of those advantages:

  1. To help you get more energy – no matter how tough you may think you are, you still need some ways to vent out all the stress and worries you have in your mind. For some people it is through a great massage. They go to Spa salons and massage parlors to avail Swedish, Thai, shiatsu or Deep Tissue massage because they feel relaxed during and after the massage session. The body receives different kind of relaxation when the masseurs perform those various massages to target the muscles in different parts of the body. As a result, these people become more energetic and happy to face another day in their lives. So if you want to experience this and be energetic once again try to get a massage.
  2. To forget about stress – work, school, relationships and other factors in your life can cause you so much stress and this is not good and healthy for you. You can start to have wrinkles all over your face because of the stress. So try to say goodbye to stress by having your favorite massage. When you are having a massage, not only your body is receiving the pleasure but also your mind. You will receive peaceful feeling while enjoying a good massage. This is definitely better than drinking alcoholic drinks to forget about your worries and stress.
  3. To treat injuries and pains in your body – do you feel some pain in your back or neck because of long day at work facing the computer and dealing with different proposals and assignments that your boss tasked you to do? Well do not try to downplay this pain because this can even lead to worst injuries so do something about it and consult a physical therapist. A massage can treat different minor muscle injuries due to fatigue or stress. Do not you notice that people who suffer injury treat it with massage therapies? Why? Well because it is really effective and even sports players who have been injured can attest to this.

These are the advantages of getting a massage. No doubt, you will feel good and light once you treat yourself to a spa or even those massage chairs available everywhere these days. Remember that it is important to treat your body and state of mind properly so you can perform all your tasks in your day.

The Innate Healing Instinct – Massage

We humans really do have great instincts. Ok, so we might not listen to them the whole time – or sometimes even be able to hear them for that matter. But they're there.

Think about the last time you changed your head. The chances are, without even thinking about it, you raised your arm, brought your hand to your head, and made it a good rub. Or recall a time you've promised a friend in need – you probably touched them, right?

In these acute circumstances of physical or emotional pain, it's as though we're genetically programmed to touch. It must have proven a valuable trick over a few hundred thousand years. But outside of these instances of acute trauma, when we're really forced to it, how often have you used touch to comfort and heal?

Now more than ever, if we want to enjoy good health in body and mind, we need to be aware of cumulative or chronic trauma. Working out is an obvious example of cumulative trauma but there's so much more than that slowly taking its toll. We have to deal with ever increasing demands from work; financial concerns; finding time for family and leisure; environmental stress such as pollution and crowding … all of these mild stresses build up and eventually the body or mind will display the symptoms of illness.

Does not it seem intuitive to soothe this trauma in the same way you would acute pain – using touch? Do you really have to let it reach boiling point – injury or illness – before you take some remedial action?

A properly trained and experienced Holistic Massage Therapist makes it his or her job to soothe cumulative or acute trauma and stress. While many look at massage as a luxuary treatment or simple relaxation, there is a great deal more to Holistic Massage Therapy – in fact, we consider this type of massage to be essential preventative health treatment.

There is not a single system within the body that has not been shown to benefit from massage – the nervous system, the immune system, the cardio-vascular system, the endocrine system, the lymphatic system, the digestive and urinary systems, obviously the muscular and skeletal systems, the respiratory system – good massage heals all of these. And if all of those are functioning well, the chances are you are going to be enjoying really excellent health in body and mind.

But Holistic Massage Therapy goes further than that. We all know about the benefits of meditation. Well, we do not all know because science is slowly catching up with intuition but the point is, it's extremely good for you. Good Holistic Massage Therapy can be considered a spiritual therapy as well as physical insofar as it will induce a deep meditative state. An hour spent being cured by a trained professional – with an instinct for healing – will take you into a state of relaxation so hard to come by in a world of distraction. Pure focus – you, your body, and the power of touch. It will clear your mind allowing you to be truly peaceful. You will not even be thinking about it at the time but when your massage is over and it comes time to rejoin the world, you will know where you've been. If this is not an essential preventive measure for health, then nothing is.

The Benefits of On Site Massage: Therapy and Convenience

On site massage can take several forms – chair, table, and special event massage, among others – and can happen in many different settings – at the office, home, convention, party, athletic event, etc. Ultimately, on site massage therapy provides all the benefits of massage therapy – increased circulation, lower levels of stress, higher energy levels – in the exact location it is needed, making it highly therapeutic – and highly convenient.

First, in the office, on site massage is a highly effective tool. For starters, there are the therapeutic benefits provided by office massage. Indeed, even short intervals of massage therapy have been shown to reduce levels of stress and ease pain from common office ailments such as stiff shoulders and neck or repetitive stress injuries. Moreover, chair massage in the office can also be used to reward employees, motivate them to finish a project or be part of a larger employee wellness program. With therapists easily able to fit their equipment into a small office or even the corner of a room, and no need for recipients to remove any clothes, on site office massage is both highly therapeutic and convenient.

Next, on site table massage at a home, in the office, or at a travel destination allows for deep relaxation in any location. The demonstrated reduction in stress and pain levels a full body massage provides can be even more pronounced when done onsite as there is no need to track down a the office office while on vacation or find travel time to a spa / therapist office while at work.

Indeed, the therapeutic massage can also be used conveniently and beneficially in several other capacities, including: as a promotional tool at a convention, with a therapist offering chair massage therapy and attracting more people to a company booth; as a way to make a promotional event, party, or other gathering more special; as a gift to improve the wellness of family, friends, or collections; as a way for cross-country commuters to reduce their stress levels and relax upon arrival at a new location.

Too often massage therapy is thought of as something practiced only at a fixed location, like a luxury spa, salon or chiropractic office, while on site massage is ignored. This should not happen as on site massage can conveniently help improve one's wellness in both personal and professional settings. Indeed, when considering massage therapy, consumers should consider on site work, both for its therapeutic properties, and for its convenience.

Massage As a Therapy – Effects of Massage

Effects of Massage on Nervous System

Massage techniques can be classified based on their effect on the nervous system and brain.

Based upon this classification, we can differentiate relaxing massage moves and stimulating massage moves.

To some extent any massage stroke type can be, depending on the pressure exerted and the speed, relaxing or stimulating. For instance, deep and slow motion effleurage strokes are relaxing, calming, while fast moves with intermittent contact will promote stimulation.

Relaxing Strokes or Stimulating Strokes

Armed with this information the massage practitioner can devise a session to cover their client needs accordingly. In sport massage for example, before a competition, nerves and muscles need stimulation, so the practitioner will adapt the session to contain alternating effleurage, vibrations and friction.

For a relaxation massage all of the strokes need to relax and the practitioner needs to never lose hand contact with the subject's skin. Continuous contact deepens the relaxation. Friction for a relaxation massage has to be performed with less pressure and using larger surface contact, such as palm heel friction or palm friction and avoid finger friction, cross-fiber friction.

In a sensual massage the things are a little more complex because the desired effect is a combination of relaxation and stimulation. The sensual massage begins with moves that promote relaxation, and slowly progresses to a combination of relaxation moves and certain stimulating techniques. The most used techniques are effleurage and nerve strokes, (feathering).

When to Use Relaxing Strokes and When to Use Stimulating

When planning the session, sometimes the massage therapist can choose the necessary moves by taking in consideration the client's body mass and physical characteristics. If the patient is a skinny, hyperactive person, the choice will be a calming, relaxing session. If the patient is an overweight person, a combination of relaxing and stimulating strokes will benefit the client the most.

How do we recognize a relaxing stroke from a stimulating one?

In general, a massage stroke that requires lubricant is relaxing and a massage stroke that it is better performed without lubricant application is stimulating. Similarly, a fast technique is stimulating and a slow technique is relaxing.

Some massage schools focus on treating body parts. The objective is to isolate the problem, (usually a muscle, a tendon or a nerve), and treat it accordingly. Eastern massage schools are more interested in treating the body as a whole, even if the client has a chief complaint. The eastern massage session has as objective physiological changes that occurs during the massage. The chief complaint will be treated indirect and the healing will happen as a result.

This approach needs an excellent mastering of the various massage techniques to obtain a perfect combination of relaxing / stimulating strokes.

No matter what is our opinion, as a therapist, on the pressure and speed of the stroke, perfectly the client is the one who decides it. We have to adjust our massage session to the customer's preference.

The Importance of Networking for Massage Therapists

Networking is important in any professional field, and massage therapists should be prepared to begin 'massage networking' almost immediately after graduating from massage school in order to get leads for jobs, professional advancement, and new clients. Massage networking is similar to 'standard' networking in that you should always try to connect with other professionals in your field for advancement, but specific to massage therapy in that networking opportunities not only help you find jobs, but help you become a subject matter expert , bring in more clients to your practice, increase your knowledge about modalities, sharpen your entrepreneurial skills, etc.

Networking with Massage Therapy Instructors

Massage therapists should take advantage of the opportunities offered to them by the instructors and administrators in massage school. Chances are that these professionals have years of varied experience in all facets of massage therapy, anywhere from spa management, to human resources / hiring, to working as a therapist, skin care esthetician, chiropractor, or doctor. Whatever their experience, they can provide you with a wealth of massage networking opportunities and knowledge about the industry, and can give you invaluable advice about starting off in your career. Who knows? Maybe they even have an 'in' at a local practice or know other massage therapists who can provide you with a recommendation that can help you land your first job as a massage therapist.

Even after you finish massage school, stay in touch with your classmates and massage therapy instructors either by meeting for a monthly lunch or seminar, or even by simply staying in touch via LinkedIn or Facebook, or some other type of social network for massage networking. LinkedIn is an excellent way for massage therapists to learn about opportunities in the field and network with a limited amount of effort – by adding instructors and classmates to your network, you can give and receive opportunities that come your way just with the click of a button .

Massage Networking with Continuing Education Courses

Massage therapists are required to take continuing education courses every two four years, depending on where they live, to maintain licensure. You should not take any type of classes available just to get the credits out of the way, because you might be missing out on an excellent massage networking opportunity. For example, say you have an interest in sports massage, but there are no sports massage courses available within your recertification cycle. Instead of taking something you are not interested in, think about taking a course in Thai massage or reflexology. Yes, it is not quite sports massage but these are both types of therapeutic manipulation that could come in handy during a sports massage event. And chances are, there will be massage therapists or instructors in these classes who are also interested in the same types of modalities as you, and could help you with massage networking opportunities that can assist you with following your career path further down the line.

It is also important to know that the instructors who teach continuing education courses often travel within regions or sometimes across the nation at the request of schools who want them to teach their specialized courses. Because these instructors are so experienced, in-demand, and well known, consider politely asking them how they became a subject matter expert in their field, and ask if they have any tips they can give you to help you excel within your preferred modality.

Massage Networking with Massage Therapists at Conferences

While massage therapists are not required to attend conferences, these types of events are incredibly resourceful and beneficial to novice and experienced massage therapists alike. Conferences are like giant massage networking conventions -you not only have the opportunity to earn continuing education credits, but you also have the opportunity to meet with renowned massage therapists, interact with the widest variety of massage therapy providers nationwide, get to experience videos and seminars you may have never even heard of, and can witness some highly educational demonstrations that you can take back to use in your practice.

While you are at these seminars, follow the same type of thinking as previously mentioned for continuing education courses to get the maximum benefit from massage networking. Consider the fact that many attendees at these conferences are seasoned massage therapists who have a variety of knowledge and experiences that they can bring to the table. Whatever your preferred modality or level of experience, by networking with other professionals at these events, you can gain a great amount of knowledge in a short amount of time that you may not have gotten from simply reading industry journals or books, or even attending continuing education courses within your state.

Finally, the wonderful thing about massage networking at conferences is that you get to travel as part of your profession, and can experience the different types of modalities practiced by massage therapists around the country. Attending a conference on the west coast or Hawaii? Look into learning about the healing art of Lomilomi to expand your knowledge about your practice. Book a hotel for a conference in Miami? Make sure to stay an extra day or two to see if you can schedule a tour of the Touch Research Institute, founded by Tiffany Fields, Ph.D. If you find yourself in Boulder, Colorado, see if you can visit The Guild for Structural Integration, founded and named by Dr. Ida P. Rolf, founder of the structural integration method known as 'Rolfing.' These are not massage networking opportunities in the way one traditionally views networking as a face-to-face opportunity, but through the knowledge that massage therapists gain from this direct experience, one can bring invaluable first-hand knowledge, discussions, and experience back to his or her practice.

Massage During Pregnancy – What You Should Keep In Mind

Pregnancy is a very important time in a woman's life and she has to take good care of her self during this period. There are many common problems that women face when they are pregnant. These include muscle cramps and aches in various parts of her body. She also goes through emotional highs and lows because of the stress of the impending birth and the presence of large amounts of hormones in the body. Massage is one of the best ways that she can keep herself feeling happy and comfortable during this time.

Massages offer a pregnant woman a wide range of benefits starting from relaxation and stress reduction. However, they also offer other benefits such as increased blood circulation. Pregnant women tend to suffer from sluggish blood circulation which leads to a variety of other problems. They also have problems with the elimination of wastes because of this. A regular massage helps to solve these problems and the woman feels a lot more healthy and active than before. Her unborn child also benefits from the massages because of the efficient distribution of nutrients throughout her body. Her skin tone also improves thanks to the massages and she is likely to not suffer from stretch marks. Even if they appear they will be very faint.

A pregnant woman should be very careful while getting massage because there are certain areas that should never be massed during this period. The masseuse should stay away from her abdomen during this period because it is not safe for the unborn child. The expectant mother should also lie on her side while undergoing the therapy. She should never lie on her back during this period because this position cuts off blood circulation to the uterus which is extremely dangerous for the unborn child. She should also avoid getting massed on tables that have cutouts that enable her to lie face down because this position puts a lot of unwanted strain on her lower back which is already under a lot of stress thanks to the pregnancy.

The massage that she gets should not be vain because that can result in the dislocation of the joints. A pregnant woman's body has a lot of hormones and one of them, Relaxin, has the ability to loosen joints in preparation of the birth of the child. You should also be careful that the floor you walk around on is not oiled because you should not risk falling down during this state. Your body should also not be too oiled for this reason.

A woman should only get a massage from a therapist who is experienced in dealing with pregnant women because their needs are very special. There are many therapists who specialize in offering this service and they are reliably easy to find. However, you should look for references for a good masseuse so that you get the best possible treatment. You will feel very comfortable during your pregnancy and your body will be better equipped to deal with the rigors that it puts upon you.

Massage for Weight Loss – Why You Should Try It

Do you feel that your exercise plan is not working very well and that all your efforts are going in vain? It will be a good idea for you to engage a massage therapist to help you get the maximum benefit from your exercise. Plenty of people do this because of the undeniable benefits that it offers them.

There is a common misconception that massage can reduce fat and that it is possible to get specific areas of your body massed in order to reduce fat in that specific area. However there are many additional advantages to getting massaged. The first is that a good masseuse can dislodge the fat deposited in the subcutaneous tissue. This will only result in fat loss if it is followed up with proper exercise. In fact, there will be a lot of fat released into the bloodstream that will get stored again if the person does not exercise properly. The added benefit is that this helps in the reduction of cellulite. It takes a very good masseuse to do the kind of strokes that help with lymphatic drainage which is what is required to get rid of the fat from the body.

The other benefit of getting massaged is that improvements blood circulation considerably. This is absolutely essential to aid in the distribution of nutrients including oxygen to different parts of the body. This helps your muscles recover faster than the effects of the exercise. You will not feel sore for very long and will be able to exercise very well. The toxic waste products of exercise will also be removed from your muscles in a very efficient manner. These waste products include lactic acid which builds up in the muscles, preventing your muscles from functioning properly.

You will feel really relaxed after a massage and will be able to get the rest that you need after your exercise sessions. You will also be able to sleep well after the exercise sessions. It is a well-known fact that a person needs to have a minimum 8 hours of sleep every day in order to lose weight steadily. People who do not get sufficient rest will not be able to lose weight in spite of exercising frequently.

You should find a really good masseuse who can give you the kind of massage therapy that you require in order to lose weight steadily. You need a special therapy that can increase your blood circulation to the extent that you require. You should also ensure that your exercise schedule incorporates regular massages so that you do not miss out on the therapy you require. It might be a bit expensive to get the massages you require but you should certainly do so because of the benefits that you get. You could work out a package whereby you get discounts on the rates you pay for massages. You will lose weight steadily and will also find it easy to keep the weight off for as long as possible.

How Does Massage Therapy Help Eliminate Muscle Knots?

Massaging muscle knots is instinctive. When we feel a knot in the muscles of our back, most of us reach back to massage it, without even knowing just why massage helps eliminate them knots.

To explore how knots benefit from massage, let's look at how a massage therapist, who specializes in muscle tension, injury, and knots would approach the problem.

The first duty of a massage therapist is to palpate the muscles of their clients in order to identify and assess areas of tightness, such as the case with a knot. Sometimes this part is easy – you do not have to be a therapist to find a knot as large as a grape under the skin's surface.

A massage therapist will then warm the area of the muscle knot up with smooth strokes increasing in pressure. These initial massage strokes are designed to bring circulation to the area, and warm up the muscle before more specifically addressing the knot, which would be more painful without a proper warm-up.

The massage therapist will then apply direct, targeted pressure to the muscle knot within the muscle. This pressure should fall at about a the therapeutic “7” on a 1-10 pain scale, and the massage therapist should be very communicative with the client to be sure the appropriate pressure is applied to the muscle knot.

Muscle knots are bands of muscle in spasm. The chronic, active contracting of these fibers is painful, and causes a pain-spasm-pain cycle.

When the massage therapist applies pressure directly to the knot and holds this pressure steadily, energy, in the form of oxygen in blood, can no longer feed this contraction, and the muscle knot, starved, must let go.

Commonly the client and therapist will notice that tension and discomfort increase a bit just the moment before the muscle knot does surrender and release.

A client who reported to their massage therapist that the pressure delivered was registering as a “7” on the pain scale, will commonly report that this number has been dropped to a 2 or 3, with no change in the pressure applied, once the knot has subsided.

The relief to the massage client, once a muscle knot has been treated, is immune, and spreads much more than the local area of the knot itself. This is because knots bind up, and take up the space of other muscles, often causing discomfort in distant areas. This is called “referral.”

Massage therapy is the remedy of choice for sufferers of muscle knots because massage therapy is muscle therapy. It is our instinct to massage muscle pain, and because of their experience and training in the muscles of the body, massage therapists are the natural choice for relief from knots.

Massage Intake Form

A massage take form is a piece of paperwork that you can expect to fill out at your first appointment. Your therapist needs the information on this intake form to give you the best possible care during your appointment.

A client take form is also necessary for your therapist to keep you safe. Clients that come in for a massage appointment may have allergies, illnesses, recent surgeries, or conditions the therapist needs to know about.

It is also possible that particular parts of the body must be addressed or must be avoided, based on your health status or preferences, and these will be made known on your massage intake form.

A client take form is vital for a massage therapist to plan your session according to your needs and needs.

If, for example, a client showed up for their massage appointment and did not include on a client take form that they had an allergy to coconuts, it would be dangerous for the massage therapist to go about using an oil containing coconut all over that client's skin.

As another example, a client may have an insulin pump, and the site of the pump would need to be avoided, but may not be readily visible to the massage therapist. The appearance of this information on a massage intake form would prevent a potentially dangerous accident.

If you have had a recent surgery, have ticklish feet, need extra attention on your low back, do not like facial massage, do not want oil in your hair, prefer light pressure or deep pressure, these are all things the massage intake form will make your therapist aware of.

A client take form is also a legal document.

You will want to include ALL information requested by your therapist on your massage intake form. This includes name, address, complete contact information, all conditions, medications, the name and phone number of your health provider, any medical issues new or old, your signature, and the date.

As a legal document, a massage enter form protects both you and your therapist by specifically providing what information was shared with your therapist prior to your massage.

People frequently consider surgeries over five years old “ancient history” and not necessary to include on a massage take form, but this is a mistaken belief. Knowledge of even an old surgery, accident, or injury can help your massage therapist deduce what may be causing discomfort today.

Others decide intentionally to leave potentially embarrassing conditions, surgeries, or medicines off of their massage take form. This is also a very bad idea, and technically, these individuals are being untruthful on a legal document.

As a healthcare provider, a massage therapist has a responsibility to maintain client confidentiality and you should feel safe, and comfortable including all health related information on your massage intake form.

A massage take form is your best friend if you want to let a your massage therapist know your health status and preferences.

What Are Muscle Knots?

If you have experienced a muscle knot, and most people have, you know what the feeling is. Muscle knots are painful to the touch, and underlie pain with the use of the entire muscle involved.

Sometimes a person is at first only aware of the general muscle soreness caused by a knot, without knowing the muscle knot is present, until, while reflexively reaching back to rub and ease the pain, they find the knot.

On palpation, a muscle knot can feel as large as a grape under the surface of the skin. Less commonly known is that knots even as small as a grain of sand can be found by a professional such as a massage therapist.

So, what are muscle knots?

Before addressing knots specifically, let's look at the structure of muscles.

Simply, most skeletal muscles are comprised of numerous fibers that run parallel and attach on each end to a structure such as bone.

Healthy muscle fibers do one thing – contract – either by conscious command through the nervous system, or reflexively. By doing so, they bring the structures to which they attach closer together, creating movement at joints.

Interestingly, even at their hardest work, flexing for long periods, as a weight lifter may require, muscle fibers work as a team, taking turns bearing the burden, individually sneaking a rest for greater endurance. This happens at a very quick, “flickering” speed.

When a muscle contains a knot, what is happening is, certain fibers are firing actively on a constant basis. While in spasm this way, they can be extremely painfully through the surrounding area. The pain actually causes the muscle to spasm more, and the cycle continues.

They are also no longer available to lend a hand to the team, so the muscle is in effect less powerful because of the knot. So, a muscle with a knot is both painful, and less efficient.

The cause of the muscle knot is not certain, but doctors believe there is a relationship to an abnormal protein build-up after a release of lactic acid.

A knot is less likely from over-use injury, than it is from short bursts of activity carried out by an otherwise sedentary muscle.

To get rid of muscle knots, apply direct, targeted force to the knots, or see a qualified professional who specializes in assisting with soft tissue injuries, pain, and knots – a massage therapist.
