Why Is Reflexology Controversial Anyway?

Reflexology is based on the principle that there are different areas located on the feet, hands, and ears, which correspond to different areas in the body. According to reflexologists there are different reflex areas on the feet and hands which form a body map; an image of the body. Reflexologists manipulate these zones through pressure on the promise and believe this pressure will physically affect different areas of the body. While there is no concrete medical evidence which supports this theory, practitioners are adamant that they can improve health and wellness through pressure points on these areas, and despite the lack of support from the medical community many people have found comfort and recovery through this alternative practice .

Reflexologists claim that they are able to influence “life energy” (known as Qi), open energy pathways and restore energy balance through this treatment. While facing a fair amount of criticism from the scientific community, reflexology still holds some standing, especially in the circles of alternative medicine practitioners. So, we know that reflexology has come under fire in recent years, but where did this treatment originate and can that possibly aid in substantiating reflexologist's claims, debunking whether this alternative treatment has historical substance or if it was just formulated by a guy who was looking to make a quick buck and, instead, made a fortune.

Interestingly enough the practices and principles of reflexology can be traced back to ancient Chinese and Egyptian civilizations. A practice started in the United States in 1913 when a doctor by the name of William H. Fitzgerald claimed that applying applying pressure in specific areas he could anesthetise other areas of the body. This idea was developed in the 1930's by Eunice Ingham, a physiotherapist that stated the hands and feet mapped the body through various reflexes. It was then that what was known as “zone therapy” was renamed reflexology. Ingham's finds were then later developed by a woman by then name of Laura Norman who shaped and formed the practice of reflexology into the practice that it is today.

Now that we know the history of this alternative treatment, how does it work? We know that reflexologists claim that different areas on the feet and hands affect different areas of the body, but let's delve a little deeper. For example, according to reflexologists the balls of the feet affect the heart and chest area, the tips of the toes affect the head; the arch triggers the pancreas and liver, and the heel; the lower back and intestines. That's just the tip of the iceberg, but through applying pressure to these areas reflexologists believe that they can promote health in organs in the corresponding areas. An explanation of the treatment is that these pressure points send impulses to the brain, releasing chemicals and producing endorphins which combat pain and de-stress the body.

While reflexology does provide stress and pain relief it is also an extremely relaxing treatment. Indeed, reflexologists do apply firm pressure during the treatment, but this being said a reflexology session should never be painful. If you do experience pain during the treatment ensure that you let your reflexologists know. Your therapist may continue to apply pressure to these tender areas and the discomfort should decrease.

So, although there is limited evidence to substantiate this alternative treatment and a possibility of pain during the treatment, so why would anyone try reflexology? Because of the results! Despite the substantive opposition from the scientific community reflexology has helped many people with headaches, arthritis, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, stress, digestive disorders, and other conditions. The fact of the matter is; if you are finding no reply from any one of these conditions then why would not you try it? Each and every person is different, and while reflexology might not work for your neighbor it may work wonders for you!

This treatment is for anyone and everyone. You can not say that a treatment is ineffective until you have tried it, and while there is much division around the subject, it could be your save and grace. Try a session of reflexology and at the very worst, you'll simply relax and feel great afterwards. And if you are ticklish, do not worry. Reflexologists apply a fair amount of pressure, so even if you giggle when someone Touches your feet you will soon get over it and relax.

Massage and Fitness Work Together

You're sporty, adventurous, outdoory, and it does not take much to get you to lace-up your trainers and head off for a run. By your standards, which are pretty high, you are in shape; fit and toned; and you love your sport. You have no qualms waking up early to exercise and your weekends are a festival of sporting events and outdoor activities. Fitness is your friend. If you love being active and have a passion for fitness then you'll enjoy these 5 reasons why a regular massage can be very beneficial when included in your fitness regime. If you are not a fitness freak and you're looking to get in shape; these 5 reasons may help, too.

1. Increases circulation

It does not matter whether you're following an intensive exercise routine or if you are just jumping on the treadmill for a couple of hours every week; good circulation will increase your stamina, allowing you to enjoy your workout. Improved circulation deliveries more nutrition and oxygen to your muscle tissue while also removing metabolic waste. A regular massage will reduce blood pressure; listen up overworked paper pushing stress nuts! Improved circulation will also reduce fatigue, general tiredness, and pain in muscle tissue. Massage has also been proved to reduce muscle adhesions formed during exercise.

2. Improves lymphatic flow

The lymphatic system is the body's purification center. Lymphatic fluid is pumped around the body, delivering pathogens such as germs and toxins through the lymphatic nodes, purifying the body. Lymph nodes are located around the body, particularly in the groin, neck, breast, abdomen, knees and elbows, and help to break down these particles so they can be released from the body. A healthy body requires a healthy lymphatic system, and a regular massage will increase lymphatic flow, keeping your body healthy by flushing out all the toxins.

3. Assists recovery

Whether through sports injury or surgery we all want to avoid downtime and get back on our feet as soon as possible. Massage has been proven to speed up recovery, allowing you to get back to full health and get back in the gym or on the road. A good massage will reduce stiffness and pain, accelerate the healing process, and relax the muscle tissue while promoting physical and mental feelings of wellness. As a result of improved circulation muscle tissue is oxygen rich and full of nutrients, providing an ideal scenario for fast muscle recovery. Ensuring that your muscles are jam-packed with nutrients will help to eliminate muscle spasms Massage will also increase muscle, ligament and tendon building and development, strengthening your body and improving neuromuscular activity.

4. Boosts immune system

Maintain a healthy body is critical if you want to keep up with the pace and continue to follow a regular fitness program then your body needs to be in tip-top condition. Ensuring that your immune system is able to fight off all those diseases and impurities is essential. When we are stressed our immune system is significantly lowered, putting us at risk to disease. Massage is a proven stress reliever which helps us to maintain and boost our immune systems. This is achieved by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system, a collection of nerve endings in the skin, which encourages the relaxation of the muscles.

5. Promotes flexibility and mobility

Effective exercise requires a flexible body to move comfortable through its range of motion. This movement is highly dependable on the joints and soft tissues around them. Scaring, adhesions and tensed trigger points in the muscles can restrict movements and cause pain and discomfort. As we get older we lose our flexibility due to a changing in the make-up of the connective tissues. However, regular exercise aids in keeping the muscles hydrated, maintaining and prolonging suppleness. While certain massage techniques certainly assist with promoting flexibility stretching seems to be the most effective solution to stiffness and restricted range of motion.

There you have it, the 5 reasons why you should include a massage into your fitness regime. Massages increase circulation, transporting all the “good stuff” such as oxygen and nutrients around the body. A regular massage also flushes all the “bad stuff” such as pathogens and toxins out of the body. They speed up recovery, boost the immune system and increase mobility through flexibility. If you take your fitness routine seriously then scheduling a monthly, or even weekly, massage is highly recommended. Ensure that your body is a pinnacle of health and wellness, so you can receive the maximum benefits from your fitness regime.

Shiatsu Massage And The Benefits Of Spiritual Proportions

Dating back as early as fifth century China, Shiatsu massage techniques arrived in Japan and through the years has been altered, updated, and shared with the world. The word Shiatsu is derived from the Japanese words “shi” and “tos” which translates into “finger (shi) pressure (tosu)”. Shiatsu massages are safe, relaxing, and effective. The pressure point concept behind Shiatsu massages is made to be an alternative to acupuncture, especially for those with a fear of needles or pain. Even people with high levels of pain, pregnancy, or disability can enjoy the effects of a Shiatsu massage, seeing as it is even now considered alternative medicine.

This form of physiotherapy revolves around the deep-tissue treatment by applying heavy pressure with ones fingers, feet, elbows, or palms by a licensed massage therapist to loosen and relax tense or sore muscles. By incorporating massage, proper breathing, relaxation techniques, and allowing the client to distress, Shiatsu massages are a great way to relieve various types of physical and emotional stress. There are also some spiritual aspects to the massage as well. The Chinese concept of “Chi,” meaning the force that guides our spirit and emotions in our body allowing us to become “one” with ourselves, is often incorporated into the treatment by focusing on an imbalance between the organs of the body. The body is said to have certain paths called meridians, in which the chi flows in order to maintain a healthy and happy life.

The shiatsu massage itself is believed to be a method of preventing the flow of chi to continue or return to a proper and steady flow. Therefore, the massage pressure points, tend to zone around the more important areas and organs of the body. While the methods being Shiatsu rarely a lot on spiritual principles and the existence of “chi,” the physiological effects and results of the massage are based on the stimulation and relaxation of the body's natural nervous system. During this treatment, the blood and oxygen flow inside the body is evenly distributed and allowed to flow more freely to supply nutrients and comfort to the body's major organs including the skin itself.

Many people are hesitant to go to a massage parlor or spa in fear of being judged based on their naked bodies or being scantily clad. However, Shiatsu massages require no oils or lotions and do not require any clothes to be removed at all. The importance of relaxation allows for the client to undergo the massage in the way that they are the most comfortable. When getting a Shiatsu massage, the client typically is instructed to lay flat on the floor, a hard but comfortable surface, or in some instances, on a low padded table, so that the pressure points and can be applied efficiently and target areas can be accessible easily.

The procedure can be completed while sitting; therefore people who have disabilities or are not physical allowed to lay on a specific structure, such as pregnant women, can still enjoy the relaxing and fortifying effects of a Shiatsu massage. By using proper breathing techniques, the licensed massage therapist can accurately locate and relax the target muscles by incorporating not only applied pressure, but also breathing properly, and stretching the body.

The benefits of a shiatsu massage can vary depending on the client involved and their individual needs. Whether it is physical pain or emotional distress, many types of people from different walks of life can benefit from a Shiatsu massage. Talk to your doctor about the benefits of Shiatsu and discover if this ancient technique and work for you and improve the quality of your body and your life.

Ayurvedic Massage: The Eighth Wonder of The World?

Since developing a love for massage at a young age, the ancient Indian art of Ayurvedic massage is still a reliably new concept to me … a year-old concept, to be exact. Given it's been around for over 5000 years and I've been around for 33 of those years, I'm genially baffled as to how I've never even heard of it til last year. One highly-likely explanation is that it's just not that available here in the UK; a simple Google search strongly suggests that, anyway.

So, for the sake of those in a similar boat to I was 12 months ago I will try and keep my explanation of Ayurvedic massage to the basics so that you only take away what you need to know …

Origin

Ayurvedic massage is a type of massage therapy that originated in ancient India over 5000 years ago. It falls under the wider umbrella of 'Ayurveda', which is the name given to the traditional form of natural medicine that is still commonly practiced in India today; massage therapy being just one element. Ayurveda perceives the body and mind as strongly connected and so all its treatment techniques – including massage therapy – employ an holistic approach and outlook. According to Ayurveda we are all born with a unique, optimal constitution, and over time that constitution is rocked and unbalanced by a variety of man-made factors; sometimes the stresses, strains and routines of everyday life. With the help of Ayurvedic massage we can apparently help to restore our constitutions to their optimal state; thus achieving health and wellbeing. Although Ayurvedic massage traditionally forms part of a comprehensive, tailor-made therapy plan, in western society it is now often enjoyed simply for its luxurious, relaxing properties.

Types

Ayurvedic massage types can vary greatly in terms of their method and primary benefit but the desired effect is absolutely the same for all; to improve one's wellbeing. Many Ayurvedic massages use warm, nourishing oil that is massaged into the skin using slow, rhythmic strokes whereas others will use powdered herbs to exfoliate the skin, leaving it looking radiant. The other 'common' method is to use warm, herb-filled linen bags to soothe areas of the body where pain or discomfort is experienced; a technique historically used on soldiers during the war.

For those who are not so comfortable with stripping down to their smalls, Ayurvedic massage can be carried out on just the feet and calves, the hands, the back and shoulders, the face, or the head ('Indian head massage').

Experience

One word; amazing! See, I told you I'd only share with you what you needed to know …

What Does A Mobile Massage Service Offer?

Have you ever considered using a mobile massage service? Maybe you've heard of it and have been curious to try – or maybe you're unsure of how a mobile massage service works. In this article, we'll cover a few of the benefits that using a mobile massage service can provide, so that you can better decide for yourself if it's right for you!

1. No inconvenience of traveling too far. Do you live in the country? Are you busy with work and do not have a lot of time to travel across the city? If so, you'll love this aspect of a mobile massage service. When you book your massage with a company that travels to you, you will not have to worry about rushing to and from work or driving a long distance for your session.

2. Convenient scheduling on your watch. Whether you're a busy stay-at-home parent or a professional strained for time, you're probably all familiar with the constraints your schedule has – and it probably seems impossible to work around your schedule to make it in to see a massage therapist. The beauty of the mobile massage is that you can schedule it when it's convenient for you, and you will not have to go anywhere. You can have your therapist meet you at the office or you can go home and have a therapist providing massage services in the comfort of your living room. It's all up to you and what you feel most comfortable with.

3. Great for those with physical limitations. Many clients who choose mobile massage have issues making it to a therapy center. Mobile massage therapists frequently assist those who are elderly and have limited range of motion, those who have physical disabilities, or clients who are ill. Just because a client has difficulty making it in to see a therapist at the clinic does not mean that they are not entitled to receive therapy – after all, massage has been proven to help those suffering with pain and illness find some relief.

4. Great for the client-therapist relationship. Many people are nervous the first time they get a massage. Going into a therapy center can actually be a bit daunting for the shiest amongst us, and meeting with a person who will be placing his or her hands on you can be quite awkward. But when you are in a familiar space, you will feel much more relaxed and open. This can help encourage better communication between you and your therapist, which means that in the future, you'll have a much stronger working relationship.

So if you've been considering hiring a mobile massage service, these are just a few reasons to go ahead and jump in. Massage therapy is such a great way to keep your body and mind in great shape – massage opens up your muscles and lets your body naturally rid itself of toxins to heal holistically. Your mind becomes calmer and more relaxed as the masseuse works, and you'll feel great when you're finished!

What Is Craniosacral Therapy? Is It for Me?

All the scientists out there are probably smirking, sipping their lattes and saying, “Cranio – Well, certainly that means a head massage,” and they'd be right, to a certain extent. However, this therapy can involve work on the entire body as it seeks to relieve pain and discomfort through releasing blockages in the Craniosacral System.

Craniosacral Therapy is the process whereby the therapist facilitates the regular flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the Craniosacral System. This system is a deep protective layer within the human body which houses the cerebrospinal fluid. The movement of this fluid can become blocked as a result of daily stresses and tensions, causing pain and resistance in areas around the body. The therapy seeks to release these blockages, encouraging the flow of cerebrospinal fluid and combing dysfunctions, stresses and acute pain around the body.

Craniosacral Therapy was first developed in the early 20th century by osteopath Dr. William G. Sutherland. Dr. Sutherland was the first physician to stake the claim that the bones of the cranium shift rhythmically. His studies and teachings were the initial spark for Dr. John Upledger who then developed the practice, deducing that facilitating the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the Craniosacral System could alleviate discomfort and dysfunction in other areas of the body.

The therapy does not only address tensions and blockages from daily stress, both internal (emotion) and external (environmental), but it can also be used to effectively treat a host of bodily dysfunctions and disorders. By encouraging a rhythmic and balanced flow of the cerebrospinal fluid. This type of therapy can be used to treat Attention Deficit Disorder, nervous disorders, the motor-coordination impaired, insomnia, and other disorders. It can also relieve neck, back and chronic pain.

When many people think of massages they immediately turn their mind towards muscles. Craniosacral Therapy however is soft tissue, fluid and membrane orientated, making it decidedly different from your traditional massage. The treatment involves very light, gentle touches from the therapist as they work between the base of the spine and the base of the head. The client is fully dressed in comfortable clothing for the treatment treatment and because of the moderate nature of the treatment it is very relaxing. Many people fall sleep during or experience a floating, weight-less feeling as the therapist goes to work.

Incorporate a weekly session of Craniosacral Therapy into your routine and notice a phenomenal difference in your body. Restore balance with this brilliant, tried and tested treatment and ensure that you effectively combat chronic pain and a host of other dysfunctions through this truly holistic treatment.

Massaging After You Exercise

Any grueling and high intensity exercises can take a toll on the body; both good and bad. Most times when someone works out it's to lose weight or to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Often times after a hard workout, the body will feel sore and in pain but that is only natural. For first time exercisers, this means you worked muscles that you have not worked in the past. For those who habitually work out, this means you worked those muscles harder than normal. Either way, you're building muscle and working the body.

Massages are a great way for you and your muscles to feel some relief. When you receive, let's say, a Swedish massage, this will help fully soothe and relax tired muscles, which can balance circulation as well as induce a feeling of wellbeing and relaxation. After a workout, your muscles are tired and will want relief. Massages are great way to keep the body balanced so that you can get back to your exercising routine.

On the other hand, massages such as deep tissue massages can help injuries to the muscles that may have resulted from working out. It's very common to pull a muscle while exercising and it's even more common for people to not take care of the problem. Do not let that be you. Neglecting the injured area can have even further repercussions and there's no doubt that you will feel discomfort the next time you work out. This treatment is recommended for muscle fatigue, chronic pain, spasm as well as limited range of motion. This is an intestinal working of tension spots in muscles and tissue to ease muscle, joint, and eliminate the pain accompanying injury. This type of massage is ideal for men and women who play sports and exercise on a daily basis.

Making sure that your bones and muscles are in alignment is what makes your body go round. With that balance, you will feel great whenever it comes time to exercise. Like I mentioned before, it is in your best interest to not neglect any injured areas. Your best options are to get a massage or simply rest but both are probably your best bet. Feeling your best when working out is important to get the most out of your exercises. This is why it is also just as important to make sure your muscles are moving correctly.

Here at Inspire Med Spa we have numerous daily spa treatments that can help you get your body back to its optimal potential. We all deserve to feel our best and quite frankly, we owe it to ourselves too!
