With the rise in technology came an increase in technology related pain. Statistics show that this is not just a minor issue, it has quickly turned into an epidemic.

Infant Massage For Children With Retinoblastoma

Childhood cancer is the number 1 disease killer of children. Yes, that is correct. Pediatric cancer takes the lives of more children than Diabetes, Cystic Fibrosis, Diabetes, Aids and Muscular Dystrohpy combined.

The American Cancer Society states that approximately 12,060 children in the United States under the age of 15 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2012, with an estimate of one in 330 children to develop cancer by age 20. While these rates are scary, thankfully advances in care make a difference.

I could spend the rest of this article quoting statistics, but instead I would rather share a short story about care that makes a difference to all those involved in this heart wrenching situation. An anecdotal benefit, as it is not easy to measure the benefit felt in the heart. There are no measures of cortisol level, or pain assessment before and after the session. The finds are those which are expressed by the child, parent and their caregivers.

During a visit to a children's hospital, I had the opportunity to provide massage for a young patient experiencing repetitive treatment for retinoblastoma (childhood eye cancer). Retinoblastoma can be very scary to both the child and family.

Hopefully diagnosed before the age of 4, the young child will experience many treatments, exams and therapies in an effort to save their life. These exams and treatments may be weekly, every three or six weeks for long periods of time. This means that baby and family must travel to the hospital over and over again. Each time after waiting in the waiting room for hours, the baby is placed under anesthesia to have eye exams and therapies. This unknown is terrifying for babies. They cry and scream while going under. In an effort to ease their anxiety, pediatric massage and infant massage has been used both hands-on for these young patients, but also in teaching the parents to take this care into their own hands.

On this visit, I had the chance to provide a short massage session, and teach parents some techniques to use in the waiting room. I saw the parents and child calm and laugh during the massage story. While walking through the waiting room, I witnessed the family, playing and laughing using the techniques I had shared. What a change to the frightened expressions from the other children and families.

Later that afternoon, I had the opportunity to visit the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU). While doing rounds, I saw my little friend waking up from her anesthesia. She was only whimpering. She was not crying or screaming like the other children were. Her parents jumped to her side and started stroking her head and held her hand. They immediately described her using touch therapy. The techniques had become part of their tool chest, and were the first method they used to soothe her.

When the nurse manager came to me in the nurse's station, she said, “This happens every time you have been here. I always know when you have worked with a family. I hate watching these children in fear and crying. ”

Sometimes, it takes an observer to bring everything back to the moment. When we are going through our sessions day to day, we sometimes forget the impact providing pediatric touch therapy for one, can make for others.

Massage: What it is and Where it Came From

Many people think of massage as a touchy-feely or purely for relaxation experience, but in reality Manual Medicine is one of the most ancient healing modalities. In addition, it is easily one of the most sustainable forms of medicine available.

History:

Massage, in it's various forms, has been noted by historians and used by people for it's healing effects for as long as there has been civilization. Ever heard of the 'power of touch'? This philosophy of treatment, where touch is applied to the patient using oils, aromatics, various tools, or just with the hands in specific patterns, has been used since the time of ancient China. The original Chinese treatment form was called “Amma” or “Anma”. Today Chinese medicine uses a form of massage called Tui Na. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, wrote in 460 BC “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly in rubbing” a reference to the importance of manual therapies even in the ancient world.

What it does:

Through the millennia, as people have discovered more about the human body, manual therapies have evolved and specialized. Massage promotes the body's innate ability to heal itself. One of the main effects of massage is the down-regulation of the sympathetic (fight / flight) nervous system allowing for proper rest and recovery.

Massage itself takes on many forms, names, and intents depending on the country of origin, who taught it, and even the practitioner. What all forms work with, no matter what the purpose of the treatment, is the soft and connective tissues of the body. The main tissue treated is muscle and the musculoskeletal system, the largest system in the body. Other structures worked with are tendons, ligaments, fascia, joints, cartilage, and even organs.

Light and Relaxing Massage has been shown to improve circulation, lymph drainage, and decrease hypertension (high blood pressure), anxiety and depression. This facilitates the healing abilities of the body and works very well in conjunction with other modalities and treatment options.

Deeper massage is shown to loosen muscle, and break up tendon and ligament adhesions. This helps with proper healing of wounds through aligning scar tissue and removing restrictions.

Massage is a great option to speed the healing process after a major surgery or accident.

Purpose:

The Goal of Massage treatments is to remove restrictions of all sorts. Restrictions and damage to the soft tissues can be the cause of much pain and restricted movement in the body.

Remedial or Orthopedic Massage:

Remedial massage, also know as Orthopedic Massage, as the name implies is about finding a Remedy (remedial = remedy) for your pain. This is one of the most clinical and thourough treatment options. Working with a detailed assessment process, this branch of manual medicine looks for the root cause of the pain. It works holistically by treating the cause or under dysfunction to allow the person to heal fully, not just cover the pain.

Practitioners will commonly provide home care advice, and exercises to help to patient improve even without direct treatment.

Treatment:

Treatment techniques used are dependent on the diagnosis by the practitioner. But some techniques are:

  • Massage (Relaxation / Swedish Techniques)

  • Compressions (similar to Acupressure or Shiatsu)
  • Trigger Point Release (for 'knots')

All it takes for the basic forms of treatment is one person who knows what they are doing. Treatments can be done sitting, standing, or lying down. Traditional Shiatsu still uses just a thin mat on the ground and oils can be used but are not necessary. Massage can be taught by someone knowledgeable and is easily practiced once you know the basics. The Clasical European Body Massage

What is the European Body Massage?

This massage type can best be described as soft manipulation with the muscles. Petrissage (rubbing), frictions, a grip we call “scissoring” for the normal wellness massage. And a “hello body” with a effleurage (soft strokes up the back ex) to begin with.

It all comes down to one thing only; loosen the muscles soft and tender in a relaxing comfort way way the costumer (yes it is a costumer, not a client! Often they fall a sleep. Something we have been discussing a lot when we where students. Personally I feel it as a compliment. I do my job and the customer can get a short nap ..

I do not do full body massage. I take one part at a time to have the time to loosen what ever is tensed on that part. Often a leg massage for people working in jobs where they stand / walk a lot (or sportsmen ex. Runners) or the most popular the back massage.

The back massage is often started with a facial massage to get the customer to relax completely; they can be very stressed and need to relax a little so I can do my job.

The actual back massage starts with an effleurage where I distribute the lotion. I use lotion not oils because I need some friction so I can hold on the muscles. If the body has a layer of oil on it I can not hold on to the muscles and my job will be much harder to do. And with a poor result!

If possible the tone in the muscle are lowered by the negative feedback function between the tendon tene and the muscle by pressing on the tendon before actually working on the muscle.

All grips are working under the skin moving the skin with the hands while working in the muscles. If you rub your hands over the skin you lose the feelings in your fingertips. You can try to rub your fingertips over your arm / leg for 10-15 sec and try to feel what is under the skin and you will find that you have lost a lot off the feelings in your fingertips. Some of the common grips are working by holding one part of the muscle with one hand and pushing with the other hand. Some grips are pushing down in the muscles with your fingertips (normally 8 working with two hands, if working with one hand (can be on the calf ex) 4 fingertips). Pressure are used on small muscle parts if needed.

One thing to remember at all time. No pain or hard pressure; it's not necessary to get the job done!
