Trigger points in the pectoralis major muscle radiates from the chest, to the shoulder, and even down to the elbow. At its worst, pain can be felt in the 3rd and 4th fingers of the hand.

Shin splints are usually muscle, tendon, or periosteum sprains / strains along the tibia. The tibia is the front bone in your lower leg. It supports most of the body weight with every step, and its supporting muscles absorb the remaining forces.

Shin splints are common in people who increase their exercise activity. Running and jumping sports are common activities that cause shin splints. Walking places some stress on the lower legs. Think of how smooth an Olympic distance runner moves across the track. Even through they run 60-100 miles a week, they are very light on their feet and the impact is minimal. Most of us do not run that smooth. Slower and heavy pounding gates send more forces into the legs than smooth runners. Shin splints are common in people running 2-3 miles because their muscles are not used to the impact and they tend not to be smooth runners. People who overpronate also increase the stress on the low leg muscles, leading to a greater likelihood of developing shin splints.

When the muscle is injured, it starts as mild stiffness and pain. Most people do not think much about it, and the pain gradually increases. It can become very tender to the touch and painful with any amount of running. Swelling might be noticeable along the tibia. The pain is relieved with icing and rest.

It is common for people to start developing shin splints, and then take a few weeks off to rest and recover. However, when they start running again the shin splint pain returns. This occurs because not all of the muscles and tendons were healed, and the impact quickly aggravated the old injury sites.

Plantar fasciitis is a chronic irritation, tendinosis, and inflammation of the plantar fascia on the bottom of your foot. People complain of a sharp heel pain that is worse in the morning when getting out of bed. One person called it an “ice pick” though the foot every morning. The muscles restrict movements increasing the foot pounding on the pavement, further aggravating the plantar fasciitis.

Orthopedic Massage and Healing

Orthopedic massage is a form of massage therapy geared towards dealing with soft tissue injury. It is a form of treatment that requires advanced training, as it pulls from many different manual therapy disciplines to accomplish its goals. They may be working in a sports massage, pregnancy massage, or medical massage setting, but before the therapist even begins working however they need to assess the injury and decide what stage of healing the injury is in to ensure a safe and productive treatment. In this article we will use a sprained ankle as an example.

There are 3 stages of healing to any injury. The first stage, the 'acute' stage, is the initial phase just after injury, particularly where inflammation and heat are present. The client is generally only capable of gentle movements depending on the severity. In the acute stage, the therapist is trained to follow RICE protocol (Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate) and is limited to working only on the body parts that are compensating for the injury. A client in this stage should also check with their doctor before proceeding. For example, if a client came to their therapist with a sprained ankle, the therapist would have the client elevate their ankle and, instead of working on the leg, would choose to work on the client's arms which are protected from the use of crutches.

Once the inflammation and heat go down and a few days pass, the injury enters the 'sub-acute' stage. The therapist has a few more options for medical treatment during the sub-acute stage of healing. Depending on the severity, gentle work may be done on the surface to increase circulation and healing to the area. Working in this time period takes great skill and training, but can be greatly beneficial in dealing with the speed at which things heal as well as assisting the lymph system in clearing out the cellular waste created by the trauma. Using the sprained ankle again as an example, the therapist could perform gentle circulatory movements over the damaged tissue to encourage blood flow to enter the mobilized area, and deeper techniques over areas adjacent to it. The increased blood flow would also carry out with it any cellular debris that was left from the injury. This method of treatment increases the body's natural healing process, much like opening a tap. Touch to the area can often also decrease pain sensitivity by providing a sensation other than pain. The therapist should also continue the work on the compensating structures to help the client with any resulting pain they might have.

As the chronic stage of healing approaches, where the injury is at the end stage of healing, the therapist's work really begins. This is also the predominate time in which clients come in looking for treatment. In this stage, deeper work can be done to soften scar tissue, re-align muscle fibers, regain mobility, and manage whatever pain is present. In the case of the ankle sprain we were using, the therapist could begin deeper work with the goal of restoring full functional movement and breaking down any scar tissue that is impeding blood flow. They may also work on strengthening the area so that the injury does not re-occur.

At all stages, Orthopedic Massage Therapy is a relevant treatment, if done correctly. However, proper identification of the stage and early treatment are the keys to success.

Massage Therapy As a Remedy for Heartburn (Acid Reflux)

Heartburn, also known as acid reflux or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), can often be helped with moderate adjustments to your diet, including eliminating the following:
